1. Assignment information
1.1. Introduction
For this assignment, you’ll be continuing as the surveyor in charge of a large survey to establish control for a significant infrastructure plant development. You’ll be tasked with preparing information and resources for your field team, and undertaking a variety of calculations and analysis on their observations.
1.2. Assignment topics
This assignment focuses on Modules 4 to 6. Additional knowledge from prerequisite subjects will also need to be utilised.

1.3. Assignment Value
Assignment 2 is a 30% (300 mark) assessment. A summary of mark distribution for the assignment is given in Table 1.

1.4. Due Date
This assignment is due on Tuesday 5th October 2021 at 11.59pm USQ time, as per the StudyDesk Assessment information.
1.5. Late penalty
For each day that an assignment is late, a penalty of 5% of the total assignment marks will be deducted.

1.6. Assignment presentation guidelines
It is expected that you will submit a report style submission for this assignment – professional report writing and presentation is a skill that should be developed alongside technical knowledge throughout your university career. The USQ library has many resources about assignment structure and writing for students that can be accessed here.
At minimum, your report should contain:
• A title page indicating the course code (SVY3107), assignment number, and your name and student number
• Clearly labelled answers linking them to the relevant assignment questions
• Page numbers
Your report should be submitted in PDF file format to ensure formatting issues between different software packages is avoided.
Any published material you refer to should be properly referenced and included in a bibliography or list of references at the end of your assignment. You should use the Harvard AGPS style of referencing. See the library website for further details on referencing.
All the information required to address the assignment questions needs to be included in your report. Any task in the report that refers to data in a spreadsheet that isn’t included in the report will receive zero marks for that task.
1.7. Submission Instructions
All submissions should be digital, and made through the StudyDesk Assignment submission link.
Your assignment submission should include:
o 1 PDF file of your assignment
Please ensure your name, student number (the 0061234567 number), and course code (SVY3107) appear at least once in the body of your assignment. Please also ensure that you clearly label each of your solutions with the corresponding question number (e.g. Task 1).
Use the following naming convention for your files:

1.8. Equipment Required
You will need internet access to access the relevant software packages and assignment resources.
You will likely need to use a spreadsheet program, such as Google Sheets or MS excel to complete this assignment. You have access to Google Sheets through your student account online.

2. Assignment Body
2.1. Introduction
You have been asked by a client to continue to provide survey information for their large development site.
You have previously completed calculations using old traverse data for five main control marks on the site, Stations 1 to Station 5.
Your client has asked you to continue work in this same area, primarily traversing between Station 1 and Station 3, with connection through Station 2.
The following assumptions can be made:
• All distances have been reduced to the ellipsoid
• Skew normal and deflections have been corrected for
• Various geographic observations of angles and distances, as shown in Appendix A
• All coordinates are in GDA2020, unless specifically stated otherwise.
• Your field team has provided a traverse for you, connecting the start point (Station 1) and end point (Station 3) through Station 2 and additional control points. These are shown in the field notes sketch shown in Appendix A. This information should be used for tasks 2, 4 and 5.
• The GDA2020 coordinates for Stations 1 and 3 are given in the table below.

2.1.1. Task 1 (75 marks)
Your field team has provided a traverse for you, connecting Station 1 to Station 3, through Station 2.
These are shown in the field notes sketch shown in Appendix A.
Your office has also recently employed a graduate who is a guru at coding, so they are being tasked to develop a small program based on your instructions for geodetic traverse reduction.
You are required to provide your graduate with:
• A comprehensive list of instructions detailing the steps that are required to reduce a geodetic traverse (up to but not including adjustment of linear misclose), working in geographic coordinates (on the ellipsoid). You should include expected input, units and a brief description of steps purpose and the calculation occurring.
• Indications of any checks needed.
• A workflow diagram for clarity.
Note: you may direct your graduate to existing calculation tools, but you must indicate what these are, including links, and still explain what the calculator is undertaking in the process.
2.1.2. Task 2 (25 marks)
The graduate has reviewed your instructions and has requested a sample of data (called Test Case 1) to ensure their code is working correctly.
Using the data from your survey, you need to test your process from Task 1 to reduce the traverse, to provide the graduate with data for Test Case 1.
The worked example for Test Case 1 should be a tabulated collection of data that includes:
• Links to your instructions provided in Task 1
• Input values for each step of the process
• Results for each step of the process
• Any assumptions you have made for variables
• Notes & references indicating where you have used existing calculator programs or spreadsheets to arrive at particular answers so the graduate can understand how results have been achieved.
2.1.3. Task 3 (75 marks)
The graduate also wants to incorporate the process for reduction of a geodetic traverse on the grid into the program they are writing.
You are required to provide your graduate with:
• A comprehensive list of instructions detailing the steps that are required to reduce a geodetic traverse (up to but not including adjustment of linear misclose), working on the grid. You should include expected input, units and a brief description of steps purpose and the calculation occurring.
• Indications of any checks needed.
• A workflow diagram for clarity.
Note: you may direct your graduate to existing calculation tools, but you must indicate what these are, including links, and still explain what the calculator is undertaking in the process.
2.1.4. Task 4 (25 marks)
You guessed it; the graduate needs a test case to test their work!
Using the data from your survey, you need to reduce the traverse, to provide the graduate with a worked example for Test Case 2.
As previously, the worked example for Test Case 2 should include:
• Links to your instructions provided in Task 3
• Results for each step of the process
• Any assumptions you have made for variables
• Notes & references indicating where you have used existing calculator programs or spreadsheets to arrive at particular answers so the graduate can understand how results have been achieved.
2.1.5. Task 5 (50 marks)
Your client is getting ready to undertake more preparatory work on their site and has requested you peg out the mid points of the line from Station 1 to Station 2 and the line from Station 2 to Station 3.
Your graduate thinks they can just code the calculations to average the end point coordinates to calculate the mid points.
You are unimpressed.
Using the previously calculated values from your traverse reductions, you need to:
1. write instructions and
2. provide the calculations supporting your instructions, which will be called ‘Test Case 3’
to prove to the graduate why their technique isn’t going to cut it, while also providing the client with the information they need.
You might like to consider:
• The different ways the coordinates of the needed stations might be calculated.
• Discussing any discrepancies between forward and reverse values and explaining why these occur.
• Which zones the marks fall in and how this might impact calculations
2.1.6. Task 6 (50 marks)
One of the departments involved in the project need to have the coordinates for the points in Task 5 provided in MGA94.
You graduate is taking a well-earned day off but will be looking into transformations on their return.
You’ll need to prepare some information for them on the different types of coordinate transformations available, and you will need to make a recommendation on the type that they should implement.
You might like to provide them with an indication of the different accuracies of each type, including an estimate of what the different outputs might produce from a test point.
