Case Study
Submission Guidelines:
This is a Case study, wherein you will be responding to a RFP Request for Proposal a design of WLAN Wireless LAN and Wide Area Network WAN. This assessment task is group task and you will work in group to apply your knowledge, to analyse, design the network in this case study. This will cover the first two learning outcomes and parts of other remaining learning outcomes of the unit. All submissions are to be submitted through tum-it-in. Drop-boxes linked to tum-it-in will be set up in the Unit of Study Moodle account. Assignments not submitted through these drop- boxes will not be considered. Submissions must be made by the due date week-5 and time is Friday 4:00 PM.
The tum-it-in similarity score will be used in determining the level if any of plagiarism. Tum-it-in will check conference web-sites, Journal articles, the Web and your own class group members submissions for plagiarism. You can see your tum-it-in similarity score when you submit your assignment to the appropriate drop-box. If this is a concern you will have a chance to change your assignment and re¬submit. However, re-submission is only allowed prior to the submission due date and time. After the due date and time have elapsed you cannot make re-submissions and you will have to live with the similarity score as there will be no chance for changing. Thus, plan early and submit early to take advantage of this feature. Groups can make multiple submissions, but please remember we only see the last submission, and the date and time you submitted will be taken from that submission.
Your document should be a single word or pdf document containing your report.
A Wireless network Infrastructure design for enterprise network: A request for proposal (RFP) to design a new Wireless Local Area Network LAN and Backbone wide area network (WAN) network design report.
Group formation: In each tutorial please form a group of 3 to 4 students to work on the group assignment. The assignment specifications are in a form of request for proposal (RFP) which is a solicitation, often made through a bidding process, by a company interested in procurement of an installation contract service to potential suppliers to submit a proposal. This group assignment provides an opportunity for you to work in a project as a group member and apply data communications and Computer networking concepts to a practical network design. You will be required to analyse a case study and make networking recommendations based on the RFP requirements. This assignment will also allow you to present your solutions in a formal reporting format. Contributions from individual members of a project group will be described in the formal report. Peer assessment component will be discussed; Forms such as Individual load factor and Group load factor will be used to access individual and group contributions. Such data will be used to individualize student marks in cases of substantially inequitable work put in by members of a given group.
You should supply the following information in response to the request for Proposal (RFP):
Task-a) Project requirements brief can be derived from Objectives and Scope of Work section of the RFP. A requirement brief is usually an itemized list of the client's requirements derived from the RFP.
Task -b) Wireless LAN design for a typical floor, which includes the following information:-
1. Wireless computer desktop layout plan with network topology for a typical floor level.
2. Wireless Access Point location on a typical floor, vertical cable paths and lengths between the floors. Switch/Access Point functional specifications. Assume the floor to ceiling height as 3 meters approximately including the false ceiling.
Task-c) Recommendation and justification of the structured backbone cabling, Access Point (AP), Switches i.e. distribution layer, building backbone cabling and media type to be used for a typical floor level and for the connection across the road to the existing LAN.
Task -d) List of equipment and the wireless specifications, technical and cabling specifications. Note: Specifications/Technical details should be included in the Appendix.
Task -e) You need to outline design rules for a computer WLAN & WAN network and describe it in detail. Your description should include:
a. Detailed steps required in the network design process,
b. methods used to form estimates of network performance for each access point taking into account the types of antennae and wireless protocol,
c. An example of a basic sample design showing proposed wireless desktop floor plan, assumptions, justifications and calculations.
d. Assumptions of backbone connectivity using wireless media needs to be reported.
e. Your new design should include IP addressing strategy for both the acquired new buildings
Write a report of maximum 3000 words, not including diagrams and pictures (you can write a good report in around 1500 words).
Description of Wireless LAN Design
The submission of the assignment will be in the form of a Technical report write-up with explanatory figures and other requirements for reporting. The specifications are as follows.
A public transport company requires that its office building be connected over a Wireless LAN (WLAN). You have been asked to respond to the following excerpt from their RFP (request for proposals) in the newspaper:
About Return2Fender Transport Company
At present, the total number of office employee is 700 with 200 in Sydney & Melbourne and 100 each in Adelaide, Brisbane, and Perth. Each office worker is provided with a multimedia desktop with wireless network connection. Owing to a business acquisition, the number of employees at Melbourne is expected to increase substantially.
Objectives and Scope of Work
The size of the Melbourne office Wireless LAN would increase/expand from 200 to 1000 stations; after two new 10-storey buildings from across the road have been acquired to accommodate for the additional office space needed to seat increased employees, see Figure 1. The new buildings have not yet been wired for the WLAN. The buildings also needs a WAN to be connected to the existing office network (from across the road).

Figure 1: A typical floor plan for structured wiring for design of LAN and WLAN (Building is 10-storey high)
It is envisaged that the two new building in Melbourne office would support a wireless networked office environment where each of the staff PC would be equipped with desktop high resolution video conferencing, VoIP alongside the usual business applications such as web, email, and regular office productivity packages. It is anticipated that the network traffic generated by each active-user is estimated to vary between 15-20 Mbps. The expected user activity pattern for all new buildings may be seen in Figure 2. The Wired LAN infrastructure needs to be designed, which should support the anticipated peak time data traffic, and in parallel you will design Wireless-LAN to support LAN.

The technical report should contain the following three important diagrams to support your report.
Diagrams:-
For a typical floor of any one building and a typical building you are required to supply the floor plan and for any one building floor-to-floor cross connect of network communication.
(1) Atypical floor-plan for any one floor, as all floors are identical and typically same.
(2) Each Building floor switches and Access-point (AP) locations & inter-connections to building, and for each building switch and routers backbone connection diagram with cross¬section of a building.
(3) IP addressing strategy, Location of Switches, Routers, Access Points. Focus on optimized design.
(4) For the entire network you will be required to provide the WAN connectivity to main head office network diagrams.
Details of structured horizontal floor cabling for desktop computers, Access points & Switches, vertical floor-to-floor cross connect structured vertical cabling diagram for a typical building and WAN connectivity for two new buildings and the Main head office building layout is required.
The technical report should include details of WLAN & WAN standards used for structured horizontal cabling, vertical cabling and network topology used should be described.
Please read the unit guide for assessment criteria and remember that if you do not understand your work, you will get minimum mark (ZERO).
Submission
Before the due date i.e. Week-5 Friday 4:00 PM, a soft copy of your technical group report with the standard assignment format has to be submitted in LMS. Please note that only one member of the group need to submit the report (submission via email is not acceptable).
Interview
Your teaching members / tutors may carry out an interview in the week 5 tutorial with each of your members to assess your work. If you cannot explain your work or what you write in your report, you may get the lowest mark. This is to make sure that the work you submit is your own work.
