This assessment task requires you to demonstrate your knowledge of routing concepts by completing a number of exercises. You will utilize material learned in the unit and also extend that learning through additional reading.
The assignment is designed to help you to achieve the unit learning outcomes as listed in the unit profile.

Question 1 – Routing Table construction (10 marks)
Given the following network diagram (Figure 1), assume that all the networks shown are aware of each other and have fully updated routing tables, and that the Default router’s interface m0 is configured with an IP of 150.3.0.4/16. Construct the routing table for routers R2 and R3.

Question 2 – Forwarding process – classless addressing (5 marks)
This question relates to the forwarding process with classless addressing. It requires you to first understand the forwarding process as explained in Forouzan Chapter 6, Section 6.2. Study section 6.2 carefully, and then answer the following questions.
a) Summarize in your own words how the router determines whether the destination network is in its routing table and the steps it takes in order to forward the packet to its next destination. Assume a classless destination address. (1 mark)
b) Refer to Figure 1 network diagram from question 1. Assume that a packet arrives at R4 with a destination address of 150.32.0.17. Show the router’s forwarding process, that is, all the calculations it does to determine where to send the packet, and the router’s decision. Optionally, use a table to organize your data (2 marks).
c) In the same diagram (Figure 1), assume that a packet arrives at R3 with a destination address of 150.32.48.15. Show the router’s forwarding process, that is, all the calculations it does to determine where to send the packet, and the router’s decision. Optionally, use a table to organize your data (2 marks).
Question 3 – Routing and Autonomous Systems (10 marks)
Research and review appropriate materials, including reputable online sources and the textbook, and then answer the following questions in your own words. It is important to show your understanding by using your own words. Proper referencing (use Harvard system) will be expected.
a) Discuss Autonomous Systems. What are they – give an example? How do they relate to BGP? (1 marks)
b) Discuss Inter-domain routing. Your discussion must include the main or the main routing protocols associated with inter-domain routing. (2 marks)
c) Discuss Intra-domain routing. Include in your discussion the main or the main routing protocols associated with intra-domain routing. (2 marks)
d) Take one inter-domain routing protocol and one intra-domain routing protocol as your example and explain the similarities and differences between them. (3 marks)
e) Briefly explain why there are different protocols for inter-domain and intra-domain routing. (2 marks)
