STAT600: Data Analysis and Interpretation
Assignment 2
Total Marks: 20
Instructions:
Please answer the questions in the prescribed format, and submit the assignment in a Word document.
All graphical presentations are to be completed by an appropriate statistical software.
Numerical descriptive statistics could be computed either by a statistical software or manually.
Marks would only be awarded if the reason / explanation / justification is sensible and probable, where appropriate.
Marks and feedback comments are expected to be posted on LEO by Oct 29, 2018, 9 am.

Question 1
(18 marks)
Select the same social issue (e.g. domestic violence; office bullying; ethnic or gender discrimination; teenage suicide; alcohol related violence; wealth differentiation between ethnic groups; homelessness) in two countries that are of interest or passion to your Group.
Collect 8 years of data on the issue from each of the two countries, where appropriate.
Almost every developed economy has a national institution (e.g. Australian Bureau of Statistics) website of which provides data free.
Attach a hard copy of the data at the end of your assignment.
Compute the following descriptive statistics for the data collected:
(4 marks)
Note: Please include the workings as part of your answer.
Descriptive Statistics
Country 1
(Variable X) Country 2
(Variable Y)

Mean
Standard Deviation
Coefficient of Variation
Covariance (between X and Y)
Coefficient of correlation (between X and Y)
Justify in which country the social issue is more serious, based on the data themselves and, where appropriate, the numerical descriptive statistics in b).
(2 marks)
Answer:
Country: ____________________________________
Reason:_____________________________________
Justify whether the social issue, based on the data themselves and, where appropriate, the numerical descriptive statistics in b), is a common phenomenon (viz. correlated) between the two countries.
(2 marks)
Justification:_________________________________

Imagine you are the prime minister of one of the two countries.
Justify or “lie” that the social issue had improved under your administration, with
An appropriate graphical method (e.g. bar chart; histogram; line chart) and its interpretations
The data themselves and, where appropriate, the numerical descriptive statistics in b) and their interpretations.
(6 marks)
Answer
i) Justify / “lie” with the graphical presentation of data:
___________________________________
ii) Justify / “lie” with the data themselves and, where appropriate, the numerical descriptive statistics in b). You might like to further support your answer with qualitative considerations like government policies implemented, changes in population and social demographics, and alike:
___________________________________
Select one of the two countries, and suggest a plausible factor that, in the Group’s opinion, has contributed most to the social issue.
Explain the causation between the social issue and the factor the Group has suggested.
(2 marks)
Answer
Factor:
___________________________________
Explanation of the causation:
___________________________________

Imagine you are the president of the Human Rights Commission of United Nations.
You would like to test whether the claim by the President is supported by evidence.
Set up H_0 and H_1 to test the claim.
(2 marks)
Note: µ is the unknown and hence assumed parameter mean for Variable X or Y.
Answer
H_0 (in the form of H_0 : µ = a numerical value which you need to justify from the data collected)
H_0 : µ = ?
President’s claim (he / she had done a good, average or bad job in mitigating the social issue):
_________________________________________
Justification of the numerical value of µ: ________

H_1 (in the form of H_1 : µ ?, or the numerical value in H_0)
H_1 : µ =, ?, or ?
Justification of the choice of ?, or :________
Question 2
(2 marks)

Assignment 2
Group Instructions
Please form a Group of 4 to 5 members and complete the following:
the Group Leader (identified as (L) after the name) and the group members;
the specific (not general) tasks allocated to each member of the Group, including the role of the Group Leader; and
the percentage (%) of contribution of each member to the Group Project.
Group Name:
Name Task(s) % of Contribution Initial / Date
1. 1.
2.
etc.
2.
3.
etc. Total: 100%
The initial is the evidence of members’ concurrence with the contents of the “contract” as well as the commitment to fulfil their obligations.
Group member(s) who do(es) not complete ALL the tasks as committed would be considered as not having submitted the Group Assignment; ZERO mark would be awarded.
Other group members are not expected to make up for the task(s) not having completed; no marks would be deducted and the Group as a whole would not be penalised accordingly.
