Numeracy Inquiry Project?
?
Assessment task link to unit learning outcomes: Assessment Task 1 links to the following learning outcomes: 1. develop their understanding of key concepts in primary school mathematics and numeracy teaching
3. plan for effective teaching that supports children's learning?
5. use and integrate learning technologies (e.g. calculators, interactive whiteboards, and tablets) in teaching 6. consolidate personal numeracy and statistical literacy.

Details of task:?
Note: This Assessment Task has two parts. All students complete Part A and Part B.
Details of task: Part A (equivalent to 900 words)
1. Survey your home, local environment, and community to identify different contexts, (e.g., scenes, activities or events) that can prompt mathematical investigations that provide an opportunity for families with primary school children to explore mathematics. The mathematical topics to focus on in this assessment task are measurement, geometry, probability and statistics.
2. Capture a visual recording of the contexts you identified either by taking photographs or recording video snippets.
3. Select three of your photographs ( i have attached) or short 10 second video snippets that capture three different contexts that each provide a ?
stimulus for primary school children and families to explore the mathematics apparent in the photo or video snippet. For each visual-recording, provide advice for parents about the underpinning mathematical concepts and proficiencies that could be explored using this context as a stimulus, making links to the Australian or Victorian Curriculum content.
4. Create a list for parents of at least four questions for each of your three selected contexts that parents can ask to prompt the noticing, exploring and discussing of the mathematical concepts you identified in everyday family situations. ?
5. Complete a short review (about 400 words) of the research and academic literature concerning the role of parents as children’s first mathematics educators, drawing on at least three peer-reviewed sources and additional relevant curriculum documents. ?
Part B: (equivalent to 1100 words – about 800 words for the report and 300 words for the )
1. Select one of your contexts and visual recordings from Part A as the basis of designing and completing your own hypothetical inclusive Family Numeracy Inquiry [MK1] (involving at least 1 adult and 2 primary school-aged students, e.g., Year 2 and Year 5) for a hypothetical new “family” category in the 2018 Victorian Mathematics Talent Quest (MTQ). For your Family Numeracy Inquiry, you must follow the guidelines outlined on the 2018 MTQ webpage (see: https://www.mav.vic.edu.au/student-activities / maths-talent-quest.html). N.B. For this assignment, the Family Numeracy Inquiry must involve exploring ideas in at least one of the measurement and geometry or statistics probability content strands. For 100 inspiring MTQ titles see: https://www.mav.vic.edu. au/files/100_Inspiring_MTQ_Titles.pdf ?
2. Produce a written mathematics inquiry report about your completed Family Numeracy Inquiry that (i) adheres to the MTQ
entry guidelines for primary school students, (ii) identifies the context selected from Part A, and (iii) includes: ?
1. An Abstract?
2. Mathematical aims for the inquiry?
3. Observations and results?
4. Discussion on relevance of results
5. Conclusion?
6. References and Acknowledgements ?
3. Reflection: Identify your personal insights and reflections about the potential of family mathematical investigations for supporting children’s mathematics learning and consider the implications for your own mathematics teaching. Identify the aspects of the Australian or Victorian Curriculum: Mathematics content and proficiency strands that your family MTQ investigation could enable children to explore and learn about. Identify the relevant literature from Part A (5) that supports your insights about the role of parents as children’s first mathematics educators. Draw on these insights to write a 300 word piece for the school newsletter or website to encourage families to take part in the MTQ Family Numeracy
Inquiry. ?
Written Report: Include in your final Part B written report:
1. A brief introduction that identifies the Part A context chosen for your Family Numeracy Inquiry and your justification for this decision.
2. Your mathematics inquiry report about your completed Family Numeracy Inquiry that adheres to the MTQ entry guidelines for primary school students, that identifies the context selected from
Part A, and includes: ?
1. An Abstract?
2. Mathematical aims for the inquiry?
3. Observations and results?
4. Discussion on relevance of results 5. Conclusion?
6. References and Acknowledgements ?
3. Drawing on the insights you gained from completing your Family Numeracy Inquiry and Report, and your critical reflections, write a blurb (300 words) for inclusion in a school newsletter or webpage that encourages families to take part in the MTQ. Include (i) your personal insights about the potential of family mathematical investigations for supporting children’s mathematics learning; and (ii) an example of aspects of the mathematics content and proficiency strands that your family MTQ inquiry enabled children to explore and learn about. Support your discussion about the potential of family mathematics investigations for supporting children’s mathematics learning with relevant literature about the role of parents as children’s first mathematics educators, drawn from your response to Part A (5).

All reports must be word docs of a professional standard and include the assignment title, student’s name and ID number. Reports should use 12 point font, be clearly-structured, well-expressed, and proof-read.
Referencing conventions must adhere to APA 6th edition and include accurate bibliographic details. ( please reference in this way, i need to put retrieved from where)
Further information about the MTQ can be found at https:// www.mav.vic.edu.au/student-activities/maths-talent-quest.html
Criteria for marking: Part A
1. The three selected photos/video snippets (contexts) provide a clear and relevant stimulus for rich mathematical investigation for families. ?
2. You have identified for parents the relevant underpinning mathematical concepts and proficiencies for each of the three selected, with reference to the Australian or Victorian Curriculum. ?
3. You have provided appropriate questions for each context that parents can ask to prompt the mathematical noticing, inquiry and discussion. ?
4. You have provided a clear brief review of research and academic literature concerning the role of parents as children’s first mathematics educators, drawing on at least three peer-reviewed sources and additional relevant curriculum documents. ?
Part B:
1. You provided a clear mathematics inquiry report about a completed Family Mathematics Inquiry that was derived from a context identified in Part A, relevant for families of primary school students, justified, and included: Abstract, Mathematical aims for the inquiry,
Observations and results, Discussion on relevance of results, Conclusion, and References and Acknowledgements. ?
2. You have provided a blurb for parents that clearly explains the benefits of children participating in MTQ, supported by evidence about the aspects of the mathematics content and proficiency strands that your Family Numeracy Inquiry enabled children to explore and learn about, and reference to relevant literature about the role of parents as children’s first mathematics educators. ?

Communication
1. Your English language proficiency standard, including grammar, vocabulary, punctuation & sentence structure demonstrates clearly-structured, well-expressed, clearly proof-read and coherent development of ideas of a professional standard. ?
2. Your standard of academic literacy demonstrates clear organisation of ideas in response to the task, proper style, voice & referencing conventions using APA 6th edition and accurate bibliographic details.
