Structured Framework for Assessment Task 3 – Written Assignment
1. Watch the video vignette demonstrating TPR assessment (NRSG139 LEO, Assessments tile).
2. Select one of the following NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016) from the Nursing Competency Assessment Schedule (NCAS) document:
a) Standard 2: Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships
b) Standard 4: Comprehensively conducts assessments.
3. Using Gibb’s Cycle of Reflection [refer below] as a structured framework, reflect on the challenges that exist in completing objective and accurate clinical assessment, and what this will mean for you as a student on clinical placement next semester. The relevant NCAS Standard (Standard 2 or Standard 4) must be referred to throughout your reflection.
4. Upload your reflection as a MS Word document via the Turnitin link in the NRSG139 LEO Assessment tile.
5. Keep an electronic copy of your reflection to add to your personal professional portfolio.
The use of 1st person writing is expected for this written reflection.
You can use the Gibb’s Cycle of Reflection framework as headings for your reflection. Use APA 6th ed. referencing style.
Follow this adapted structure of the Gibb’s reflective cycle in constructing your reflection. Your reflection must directly relate to the NMBA standards (above) that you have selected for this reflection.
• Concisely describe details of the event you are reflecting on.
o What happened; where the event was; who else was there; what the people were doing; what was the result?
• What were you thinking and feeling about the way in which the healthcare interaction progressed?
o Try to recall and explore the initial things that were going on inside your head.
o How were you feeling when the event started; what were you thinking about at the time; how did the event make you feel; how did other people make you feel; how did you feel about the outcome of the event; what do you feel/think about the event now; did your thoughts and feelings change during the event?
• What was good and bad about the experience?
o Evaluate and make a judgment about what has happened. o What was good about the experience/event; what was bad about the experience/event; what didn't go so well; what did you and other people do to contribute to the situation (positively or negatively)?
o Justify your thoughts with evidence.
• What sense can you make of the situation?
o Break the event down into its components, explore the various components.
o Look back and ask more questions about previous answers like: What went well; what did others do well; what went wrong; what didn't turn out the way it was supposed to; who and what contributed to how things turned out?
• What else could have been done?
o Having worked through the different stages you now have more information to base your judgment on BUT you still need to justify your responses with evidence. o What insights have you gained by working through the reflection process; what have you learnt from the experience; what skills do you need to develop for your future practice, so that you can manage this type of situation appropriately?
6. Action plan
• What will you do to ensure you develop the skill to manage this type of clinical situation (and meet the requirements of either NMBA Standard 2 or 4) on clinical practice? o What actions do you need to take?
