SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:
Reflections must be submitted electronically as a Microsoft Word document file via the VU Collaborate Assignment Submission process. The file name for your essay must be in the format of Family Name Student ID Assignment.
For example: McWilliams s1234567_First_Reflective_Journal.
Reports submitted with any other file name format will not be accepted.

Instructions for the First Reflective Journal:
When you started your degree you prepared a Student Success Plan as part of your enrolment. Your Student Success Plan included a number of questions about the career you intend to pursue after graduation. Now that you have been at university for some time and have completed several units of study your plans and expectations may have changed - or they may have stayed the same.
This assignment requires you to reflect on how your Fist Year University studies have affected the career plans that you had when you wrote your Student Success Plan.
Reflections are intended to assist you in articulating and strengthening your understanding of the learning activities covered in class. You are not to merely describe the activity or experience. You must carefully reference your work using the Harvard Referencing System.
Each Reflective Journal entry must include a minimum of 3 References. If you do not include any references in your reflections, your work will be marked to no more than a pass level only.
Below is a suggested format for writing your reflective journal.
REFLECTIVE WRITING: DIEP
Reflective writing aims to help you to organise your thoughts about your learning experiences. The approach in BMOI 102 for reflective writing is to use a DIEP model (adapted from Boud, D 1985, Reflection: Turning Experience into Learning).
The DIEP model
The four steps in this approach are to describe, interpret, evaluate and plan.
D - Describe objectively your experience of what happened.
Answer the question: 'What did I do, read, see, hear, etc?' I - Interpret the events.
Consider why events happened in the way they did. Explain:
what you saw and heard your new insights your connections with other learning your feelings your hypotheses and/or conclusions
Answer the question: 'what might this mean?'
E - Evaluate the effectiveness and usefulness of the experience
Make judgements that are clearly connected to observations you have made. Answer the questions:
What is my opinion about this experience?
What is the value of this experience? Why do I think this?
P - Plan how this information will be useful to you.
Consider: In what ways might this learning experience serve me in my:

DIEP strategy for writing a reflection
In your entries you should attempt to:
analyse your own performance as a learner evaluate what improvements you made in understanding and completing tasks say how you feel about your learning make connections with other experiences and ideas demonstrate transfer of learning integrate the concepts taught in other subjects (including the literature where relevant)

Non Reflectors: A very descriptive report on what is/was happening and/or the content, rather than revisiting the material; impersonal account where ideas are substantiated only with reference to other writers and not with personal experiences; and tends to use simple logic, such as if this... then that.
Reflectors: Identify relationships between prior knowledge and feelings about new material; are able to modify the well-known to suit new situations; arrive at insights, possibly some are original but do not demonstrate the validation of assumptions or of making knowledge their own.

Critical reflectors: Always return to experience in discussion; attempt to continually examine experience and self in a critical manner; pursue alternative views and possibilities; draw on a number of resources; are courageous in trying out new ideas are amenable to change; and do not take things for granted but deliberately test proposition.

The following is a writing strategy for reflective journal entries in four paragraphs.
D — Paragraph 1, Describe objectively what happened
Give the details of what happened. Answer the question: 'What did I do, read, see, hear?'
I — Paragraph 2, Interpret the events
Explain your learning: new insights, connections with other learning, your feelings, hypotheses, conclusions. Answer the questions: 'What was the reason I did this activity?' 'What might it mean?'
E — Paragraph 3, Evaluate what you learned
Make judgments connected to observations you have made. Answer the question: 'How was this useful?'
P — Paragraph 4, Plan how this learning will be applied
Comment on its relevance to your course, program, future profession, life... Answer the question: 'How might this learning apply in my future?'
