INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS:
1. This End-of-Course Assessment paper contains ONE (1) question and comprises FIVE (5) pages (including cover page).
2. You are to include the following particulars in your submission: Course Title, Your PI, Your Name, and Submission Date.
3. Ensure that you submit your End-of-Course Assessment by the deadline. After the 12-hour grace period, 10% of the total End-of-Course Assessment mark will be deducted for each 24-hour block or part thereof by which your submission is late. Submissions with more than 50 marks deducted will be awarded 0 marks.
4. You are allowed multiple submissions to Turnitin before the deadline. After the deadline, only one submission is allowed, and only if you have not already made a prior submission.
5. If you fail to submit your End-of-Course Assessment, you will be deemed to have withdrawn from the course.

Please read this information before you start working on your ECA.
This ECA carries 50% of the course marks and is a compulsory component. It is to be done individually and not collaboratively with other students. You must submit it on time.
Submission
You are to submit the end-of-course assignment (ECA) in exactly the same manner as your tutor-marked assignments (TMA), i.e. using Canvas. Submission in any other manner such as hardcopy or any other means will not be accepted. Ensure that you submit your ECA by the deadline. After the 12-hour grace period, 10% of the total ECA mark will be deducted for every 24-hour block or part thereof by which your submission is late. Submissions with more than 50 marks deducted will be awarded 0 marks. You are allowed multiple submissions to Turnitin before the deadline, after which only one submission is allowed, and only if you have not already previously submitted. If you fail to submit your ECA, you will be deemed to have withdrawn from the course.
You are reminded that electronic transmission is not always immediate. It is possible that network traffic may be particularly heavy on the cut-off date, and connections to the system cannot be guaranteed. Hence, you are advised to submit your work no later than the day before the cut-off date in order to make sure that the submission is accepted and in good time.
Once you have submitted your ECA, the status is displayed on the computer screen. You will receive a digital acknowledgement message. Please note that it is the digital time-stamp— and not the acknowledgement message—that indicates that you have submitted your ECA. To ensure a timely submission and to have your ECAs marked, you should therefore not jeopardise your course result by submitting your ECA at the last minute.
Do ensure that you have the correct files for submission. Any submission, extra files, missing appendices or corrections received separately after the submission of the ECA will not be considered in the grading of your ECA assignment.
Plagiarism and Collusion
The University takes a very serious view of plagiarism (passing off someone else’s ideas as your own, or recycling of contents from your own earlier marked TMA from the same course or another course) and collusion (submitting an assignment which is the same or very similar to another student’s). Both are forms of cheating, and neither is acceptable in any form in a student’s work, including this ECA assignment.
Avoid plagiarism by giving yourself sufficient time to research and understand the material so that you can write up your assignment in your own words, and ensure that you provide appropriate references when necessary. You can avoid collusion by ensuring that your submission is based on your own individual effort.
Penalties for plagiarism and collusion are severe. Serious cases will normally result in the student being referred to SUSS’s Student Disciplinary Group. For other cases, significant marking penalties or expulsion from the course may be imposed. For more information about the University’s policies on plagiarism and collusion, refer to the Student Handbook (Section 5.2, paragraph 1.3).
Question (Total 100 marks)
Answer the following question in 4,000 words. (Do not exceed or fall below the word limit by more than 10 per cent.)
Today, most acts of crime and/or deviance in the public eye are scrutinised by social media. The act of rape is no exception. Amongst other things, social media has become both a means to criticise the rape victim and an empowering tool for the victim to seek justice through public support.
Recent cases in the region such as the 2014 Ong Soon Heng rape case in Singapore and the 2015 rape of Airdre Mattner in Seoul, exemplify the role of social media as the fourth estate.
By considering the criminal context of ‘rape’ as socially constructed and with Singapore as your primary focus, write an essay that adequately addresses all three of the following inquiries:
a) What constitutes ‘rape’ in Singapore and how is this official definition limited?
With reference to Section 375 of Singapore’s Penal Code on Sexual Offences*, analyse the definition of ‘rape’ in the Singapore context.
In your analysis, identify the limitations of this definition, linking your findings to Singapore’s social norms and values.
*You should search for ‘Section 375’ within the Singapore Statutes Online: http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/aol/home.w3p and use this definition of ‘rape’ as your reference.

b) How do you think social media functions as the fourth estate in the case of rape and what does it reveal about crime statistics pertaining to incidences of rape?
You should develop points for your argument here by researching at least one case study – either of the given cases or any other rape case(s). Appraise the role of social media as fourth estate, showing how it may lead to instances of victim-blaming, or conversely, victim empowerment, and in turn affect the quality of official statistics.
While you are not restricted to Singapore-based cases, you may want to strategise your choice of case(s) keeping in mind the flow of the essay as a whole. You are also free to compare two or more cases to develop your argument.

c) Comment on the equally powerful role of labels in a rape incident and the fallibility of Singapore’s Criminal Justice System, with respect to rape proceedings. What about the system would you change?
Here, you should tie in the loopholes you have identified in the official definition of ‘rape’, the impact of social media on rape cases and the parties involved, as well as the effects of labels like ‘offender’, ‘victim’, ‘rapist’, ‘deviant’, ‘criminal’, amongst others. Consider the use of labels within official proceedings for rape cases, particularly a justice system like Singapore’s which takes a conservative approach. Suggest any change(s) that you feel will improve the system, paying special attention to changes relevant for matters of rape.

Your essay should flow as a coherent whole; the allocated marks are meant to serve as a guide for the appropriate length of discussion and detail expected.
Students’ Notes
Rape is a sensitive topic but not beyond the scope of sociological inquiry. Your essay should not impose concerns of morality on the victim, offender or any other party involved in the case studies presented (for example, stating that the victim should not have been out clubbing). Rather, you should sociologically identify concerns of morality as a part of the social underpinnings of ‘rape’ (for example, stating that a victim is often blamed for attracting unwanted attention because of the supposedly immoral nature of the location (i.e. a bar or a club). You should also ensure that your points of argument are rigorously substantiated with sociological theories and/or concepts as well as real-world examples.
In addressing the question, you should utilise your course readings and the theories/concepts covered in the course. Official online sources such as the Singapore Statutes, credible news sites and newspaper articles may be used as references beyond course readings and other academic material. You are strongly advised to derive your understanding of key concepts and theories from course material rather than resort to generic sites for ‘quick-fix’ definitions (i.e. avoid Wikipedia, Boundless.com, CliffsNotes, etc.).
While there is no stipulated number of references that you should adhere to, use discretion to consult enough quality resources to support an essay of this nature and length. Be mindful that over-using/quoting a handful of references is akin to plagiarism.
Finally, please make sure to properly cite all references used, both in-text (no footnotes or endnotes) as well as in a list at the end of your essay. You may use the APA citation style to format your references (www.apastyle.org). Other social science citation styles (e.g. ASA; Chicago Manual of Style) are also acceptable but please be consistent with whichever one you choose to use.
