McClelland's Theory of Needs
Read about McClelland's Theory of Needs on pages 132 and 133 and review the powerpoints on the link below to capture the main points. McClelland believed that needs profiles differed between people because of the way each person is socialized in their early life. Watch this TedTalk (https://www.ted.com/talks/eric_whitacre_a_virtual_choir_2_000_voices_strong) about the first virtual choir and answer these questions as the video plays.
1. Which of McClelland's needs motivated Eric Whitacre to join the choir in college?
2. What behaviours of the virtual choir members point to high achievement, which is -the drive to excel, to achieve in relation to a set of standards, to strive to succeed-?
3. Does conductor Eric Whitacre require a high need for power in order to be successful in this project? Remember for McClelland power is the need to make others behave in a way that they would not normally have behaved otherwise. Is this the typical Theory X threatening behaviour that we typically think of as power?
4. At the end different choir members reported different experiences as part of the virtual choir; list some of the needs that caused people to participate.
5. Research shows successful managers should not express a high need for affiliation in their workplace. Why would this be?

Activity 3: Apply Expectancy Theory to an actual situation.
Instructions EXERCISE – EXPECTANCY (Wayne Sellars)
Wayne Sellars has worked for 20 years at Elk Island Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of men’s clothing. His supervisor has just offered him a “special assignment” to collect, compile, and analyze data regarding their customers’ changing tastes in clothing.
In the past, “special assignments” have earned a $3,000 bonus if they were completed at least one month prior to the deadline. The final deadline for this assignment is March 29th
Wayne’s supervisor explained that a total of 500 responses are needed, including at least 50 from each of 10 stores throughout the metropolitan area. He asked Wayne if he felt up to the task and whether he could complete the project by the bonus date. Wayne said he was feeling his age, but with his retirement in nine months, he could use the extra bonus money.
1. Using Expectancy theory, identify and explain how the three factors of the theory apply to Wayne’s decision to work hard or not.
Wayne decided to accept the “special assignment”, but by March 18, he still had five stores left. He was sure he could not meet the early deadline to earn the bonus. Wayne was starting to feel pressured, which he felt he didn’t need at this stage of his life. He felt his motivation to continue the assignment slipping.
2. What change for Wayne?
3. What effect will the following have
(a)Reassuring Wayne he can meet the deadline:
(b)Increasing Wayne’s bonus:
c)Reinforcing the deadline

Assignment 3
Word limit: 120
Due Date: February 10,2018 @ 11:55 pm (MST-Canada)
Larry Weinstein had been assistant manager of the big north-side store for five years when he was promoted to manager of the smaller south-side store. When Larry started on Monday, he decided that the first week he would mainly spend his time observing what went on in the store so he could make an assessment of the important decisions and directions that the store needed.
Larry found that he had problems with Frank and Lester, the stock clerks. Larry knew that a well-run store tried to keep the shelves stocked at an 80% level at the end of each day. In the first week, Larry noted that the stock rate averaged 60% and that one day it was less than 50%. Larry observed Frank and Lester spent a substantial part of their day outside at the back of the store, smoking and talking. In addition, Frank and Lester were frequently slow to answer the call for carry-out services. Sometimes, a customer had to wait more than five minutes and three calls before Frank or Lester would show up at the checkout counter. Finally, on Saturday, Frank came to Larry and requested to leave work two hours early because of his Saturday evening activities.
Larry knew from his previous experience that the store was not under-staffed in relation to its size and sales volume. Frank and Lester should be able to carry the load. As Larry came into the store on Monday of his second week, he thought about his plan to get the stock clerks’ performance up to par.
1. Identify 1 behaviour that Larry could target for change and explain how he would use positive reinforcement as a strategy.
2. Identify a different behaviour that Larry could target for change and explain how he would use negative reinforcement as a strategy.
3. Identify a third behaviour that Larry could target for change and explain how he could use punishment as a strategy.
4. Is there any behaviour suitable for using the strategy of extinction? Explain your answer.

2. If you could redesign your current job, or a job you have held in the past, explain how would you redesign it using the principles in chapter 5? (Hint: Make sure to analyze the job using exhibit 5-3 identifying a high or low and explaining why you are categorizing that way and then proceed to redesign it.) Be as explicit as possible with supporting information.

b) Then you will analyze through discussion how well it scores on the job characteristics model. The questions on page 196 will assist you in rating each job dimension.
c) Recommend how you would re-design the job to be more motivating .
Activity 3: The Role of Money? (Discussion)
Watch the following TED Talk, featuring career analyst, Dan Pink: -The Surprising Science of Motivation: What Science Knows, and what Business Does.-
http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_pink_on_motivation.html
Using evidence from your text, discuss the role of money as a motivator over the long term.
More specifically, to what extent do you agree/disagree with Pink's claim that when it comes to cognitive-focused tasks, an inverse relationship exists between the use of extrinsic motivators and the level of motivation employees exhibit? (In other words, the larger the sum you pay someone in the form of a bonus, raise, stock options, etc., the lower their level of actual motivation over the long term).
What practical lesson(s) does this offer for leaders within today's workplace? What is and should be the role of money as a means of employee motivation within today's working environment?
