Assessment 1
Details of the task
Each short piece will provide your response to a question, discussed in class, relating to the lecture topic and set reading for the week. Each short piece should be written in your own words. This task is designed to gradually develop your ability to engage with, think about, and write about the sociological concepts and materials we cover in the early topics of the unit. The task is also designed to develop your ability to draft, develop, and edit your work for submission.
Submissions will marked as quickly as possible. Pieces 1, 2, and 3 will be marked against the following criteria:
• Demonstrated engagement with unit content covered in lectures, tutorial discussions and set reading 2 marks
• Developing understanding of sociological ideas and concepts 2 marks
• Correctly submitted, proofread and free from errors 2 marks
Total 6 marks
The two final short pieces, due Friday 9pm weeks 4 and 5, will be marked according to the following criteria:
• Demonstrated engagement with unit content in lectures, tutes and set reading 1 mark
• Developing understanding of sociological ideas and concepts 1 mark
• Developing clear and effective written expression 1 mark
• Developing skills in editing and polishing 1 mark
• Developing appropriate use of academic language and conventions of referencing 1 mark
• Correctly submitted, proofread and free from errors 1 mark
Total 6 marks
Questions for the pieces will be provided each week in lectures, and writing and editing opportunities will be included in workshop activities.
Your completed pieces should be submitted to the relevant VU Collaborate Dropbox by 9 pm on each due date.
Short pieces should be submitted as Word documents, in 11 or 12 font, and 1.5 or double spaced. Each piece needs to have your name, student number, assignment number and question or topic indicated on a cover page as the first page of the document.
Assignments should be carefully proofread prior to submission.

Assessment 2: Short Essay 30%
Overview of Tasks
Task: Short essay
Length: 750 words
Due Date: May 7th
Details of the task
Assessment Task Two: Short Essay (750 words – 30%):
Drawing upon the lectures, readings and discussions from the early weeks of the unit, write a short essay presenting a thoughtful and informed response to one of the following questions:

Question 1. What is the sociological imagination? Draw on Willis's model to describe it, and explain how it can improve our understanding of our lives and our social world.
Question 2. Describe and discuss one or two of the major sociological theoretical perspectives.
Question 3. Is what ways is Australian society equal or unequal? Discuss with reference to inequalities of class OR gender OR ethnicity.

The short essay builds upon the thinking and writing completed during the first assessment task, and will be marked according to the following criteria:
• Demonstrated engagement with unit content from lectures, tutorials and set reading
• Developing understanding of sociological ideas and concepts
• Developing clear and effective written expression
• Developing use of essay and paragraph structure
• Developing appropriate use of academic language and conventions
• Correctly submitted, proofread and free from errors
Assessment Submission
Your completed Short Essay should be submitted to the relevant VU Collaborate Dropbox by 9 pm on the due date. Once you submit your essay, you will be able to see Originality Report (via Turnitin), which you can use to improve your essay based on the report. You will be able to submit multiple files per submission and submit your files more than once.
