Student information: Assessment undertaken in the Nursing Laboratory
There are two parts to the practical assessment (Part A & Part B)
Part A: Practical Hand Hygiene
Student Information
The purpose of this guide is to inform the student of the assessment content used to demonstrate competency in the essential skills listed below.
• Routine Hand Wash • Routine Hand Gel • Surgical scrub
Competency relates to the students ability to answer questions in a verbal assessment and to demonstrate effective hand hygiene techniques to the assessor. The student will be given a maximum of four prompts during the assessment. The student is assessed as competent or competency not achieved. If the student has not achieved competency in the first assessment, a date and time for a second attempt will be negotiated between the educator and the student.
PRACTICAL
Practical Assessment : the student will be required to perform
• An alcohol based hand rub hand hygiene procedure AND
• A routine hand wash
Environment: Nursing Lab: A selection of hand hygiene equipment will be made available. Each clinical scenario will be reflected by bed number in the lab. Eg. Bed one may be Mr Jansen.
VERBAL questions
Theory Assessment: The assessor will ask three theoretical questions about infection control and hand hygiene, related to the clinical scenarios below. The student will be given a maximum of four prompts during the assessment.
Scenarios : Nursing interventions & the need for hand hygiene
1. You have just finished toileting Mr Jansen and now you have to change Mrs Robertson’s wound dressing. Please explain which hand hygiene procedure you would choose before you go to get the dressing trolley and why.
2. You have just come back from your meal break and need to help Mr Alan Kingston who has had a stroke and requires assistance to cut up his food. Please explain which hand hygiene procedure you would choose before you pick up his cutlery and why.
3. You work in a plastic surgeons day clinic where small skin lesions are routinely removed by the surgeon. You have been asked to open up the procedure tray for a surgical procedure. Please explain which hand hygiene procedure you would choose before you begin and why.

PART B: Practical PPE & Safe Work Practices
Student Information
The purpose of this guide is to inform the student of the assessment which will be used to demonstrate competency in the essential skills listed below. The student will have already been assessed on hand hygiene prior to the PPE assessment.
• Use of personal protective equipment
• Safe spills clean up • Safe sharps handling & disposal
• Correct surface cleaning procedure
Competency relates to the students ability to answer questions in a verbal assessment and to demonstrate correct procedure for donning and doffing personal protective equipment. The student will be given a maximum of four prompts during the assessment. There are no marks for this assessment, the student will be assessed as competent or competency not achieved. If competency is not achieved on the first attempt, a time and date for a second attempt will be negotiated between the educator and the student.
Practical Assessment: the student will be asked to
• Perform hand hygiene (completed in Part A)
• Don PPE
• Demonstrate safe management of one of the clinical scenarios below
• Remove PPE and dispose of in a safe manner
Environment: Nursing Lab: Each bed and manikin will be set up to represent the clinical scenario. There will be a station with a choice of PPE and nursing equipment to effectively manage each situation.
Theory Assessment: The assessor will ask three theoretical questions about the use of personal protective equipment related to the clinical scenarios below. Eg. What are the risks in this situation?
Student may be assigned any one of the following scenarios at the time of assessment

4. Mr Collins has sustained a skin tear on his left forearm. The wound is bleeding and there is blood on the chair, blood on his hands and blood on the over-way. He also has an indwelling urinary catheter and the bag is full of urine.
5. Mrs Zhenkovski has Clostridium Difficile in her stools and is being barrier nursed. She has rung to get help to undress for bed. On entering the room you see a discarded needle on the floor.
6. Mr Fitch has a chronic leg ulcer, the carer has just told you that the wound dressing got soaked in the shower and needs to be changed as soon as possible.
