Assessment Task 2
‘Bringing it all together’?
Value: 50% of total Topic mark
Length: 3,000 words?
Due date: Monday 17 November 2014
________________________________________________________________
For this assessment task, read “Case Study 5 – Strengthening the management of the Wallo District in the Lasoga Province” on pp. 471-478 of Harris & Associates (2006). Then prepare written responses to Questions 1 to 7 only, set out on pp. 478-479.
This task will provide considerable flexibility for you to draw on the range of learning we have covered in the topic and to showcase your ability to analyse a complex situation, identify significant issues, and frame appropriate, realistic, management responses.
In real life, organisational problems are usually complex, rarely one-dimensional. Additionally, rarely is there one obviously correct solution or response just waiting to fall out neatly from an analysis of the issues. Rather, the problem is likely to be multi-dimensional with disparate contributing causes, and with no obvious, guaranteed solution. The challenge for the manager is to work through the complexity, identify and analyse the issues, and identify management responses that hopefully will resolve, or at least ameliorate, the situation.
Different managers may focus on different issues and arrive at quite different management responses to the identified problems. So don’t approach this assessment task thinking that there are particular “correct answers” to the set questions. There aren’t. Rather, the case study provides the opportunity for you to apply your own learning and experience to the analysis of the situation, to identify what you see as the major issues, and to frame appropriate management responses from your own unique perspective.
You do not have to write the same, or similar, number of words for each of the seven (7) set questions. Provided you cover each to an appropriate level, you can spend more time and words on those parts that you think require more, or that are of greater interest to you. But of course the assignment paper as a whole must meet the total word requirement of 3,000 words.
Assessment criteria for Task 2 – ‘Bringing it all together’.
There are 5 equally weighted criteria as follows:
1. The paper addresses all of the seven (7) set questions to an appropriate degree (although an equal or similar number of words do not have to be written for each).
2. The paper demonstrates relevant knowledge and application of organisational management theory to the scenario outlined in the case study.
3. The solutions proposed to address the identified problems reflect a sophisticated understanding of the issues involved, and an appreciation of what steps would be realistic and what steps would not be.
4. Considered as a whole, the paper is coherent, convincing and impactful.
5. The paper is well-structured and uses accurate language (including spelling, grammar, and punctuation). The list of resources used is relevant and is referenced appropriately.
