How to link to standards?
by xxxxxx -
Hello, I am wondering if you could further explain how we link the chosen issue to the standards. Such as if we were to focus on mouth care as recommended in the drop in session this week, would we have to link this to a specific standard such as -assessment of needs- - such as a nurse assessing the needs of the client, ensuring mouth care is provided daily ?
If so do we need to link to multiple standards?
Thanks
Re: How to link to standards?
by yyyyyyyy -
Hello xxxx,
Well done ! Yes absolutely, you could put a section in your booklet with the heading -National Palliative Care Nursing Standards- and then link your specific issue to them.
If you were selecting mouth care you could choose a few of the standards as outlined below and linking your discussion to mouth care (you do NOT have to work through each of the standards)
Standard 1 - Assessment of needs = Full head to toe assessment will alert you to any issues within the oral mucosa thus with critical thinking and application of theory to practice this leads you to ...
Standard 2 - Developing the care plan = An identification of needs: Is the mucosa broken down? Why? Is the patient immunocompromised from chemotherapy etc? Are tehy no longer drinking and thus heavily mouth breathing and drying the mouth hence what would you write on the care plan to ensure 24/7 care for this patient? Hint check out the some EBP on mouth care or the related CPG
Standard 4 Providing Care = Now that you have created a care plan you must instigate the care, what procedure /technique will you use, does the patient cope with this? Is it working and easing discomfort? If not what else might you do?
Standard 7 Service Culture = Is your intervention culturally safe? Are you respecting the wants, and cultural / religious knowings of the family and patient? Explain to the family what you are doing and that it will assist with management of pain. You could possibly put in some examples of things you might say?
Standard 8 quality Improvement = Is this improving the quality of care in your workforce? In your department, how can you ensure that you are of a national standard on your ward .... leading you to
Standard 9 Staff qualifications and training = Ensure that staff are up to date with all current EBP and CPG's are being maintained and that educaiton sessions for professional development like the booklet that you could create for your ward / hospice / would assist and provide an environment that promotes education.
Hope this helps you

Palliative care topic by xxxxxx -
Hi yyyy,
I was wondering if the use of syringe drivers is an appropriate palliative care issue?
Re: Palliative care topic
by yyyyyy - Friday, 14 August 2020, 3:16 PM
Hello xxxxx,
The use of syringe drivers is a good issue, it is quite broad, so ensure that as you work through it you discuss important topics as:
Syringe drivers and improved mobility of the patients

Syringe drivers and pain management
Syringe drivers and symptom management as pain, nausea and vomiting, restlessness etc.
-
There are examples of information regarding syringe driver use in palliative care regarding the Niki pump that is used in many settings in Australia, the link below provides additional information on this for you, please ustilise if it is of assistance for any students exploring this topic.

Re: palliativ care
by yyyyyy -
Hello xxxxxx,
Pain management is an issue that can be selected, please ensure that you break it down throughout your discussion as there are:
You could select one of these and cover it in detail or use each of the above as a heading on a slide or within the booklet and break it down with evidence based practice that you use to provide information and education to others on the issue.

Re: palliative care issue
by yyyyyyy -
Hello xxxxxxx
As per the previous post you can discuss general pain issue management or break it down and

link pain issues with a specific illness trajectory.
Good morning,
For the assessment can we use the learning objectives of the unit and reference ACU?
Re: learning objectives
by yyyyy -
Hello xxxxx,
The learning outcomes for the unit are very broad as we cover many topics.
The best thing to do would be to look at the learning objectives from the unit outline and adapt them to be specifically about your topic, therefore you will be creating your own learning objectives and will not need to reference them.
Learning Objectives are in very broad terms about you asking yourself (as you prepare your work) -
What are the important components of the topic that I am delivering that I want people to learn from my education booklet / PowerPoint-
For example if your issues was : -The importance of mouth care at the end of
life-
then looking at the LO's for the unit, you can adapt your own about mouthcare as I have in
red below
LO1 demonstrate advanced understanding of developmental, lifespan, social, spiritual and cultural factors that impact on the quality of life for people receiving palliative care; (GA1, GA4)
LO2 demonstrate advanced pathophysiology knowledge to manage common symptoms in the palliative context; (GA4, GA5)
LO3 critically apply the Roper-Logan-Tierney Model of Nursing across the lifespan, to the principles of a palliative care approach; (GA1, GA4, GA5, GA9)
LO4 implement the Levett-Jones’ Clinical Reasoning Cycle across a range of settings, to plan safe, evidence-based, culturally sensitive, person-centred palliative care; (GA3, GA4, GA5, GA8,
LO5 critically reflect on the lived experiences of the dying, their families and communities; (GA1, GA2) LO6 critically evaluate the quality use of medicines, non-pharmacological therapeutic interventions and complementary therapies in the palliative context; (GA1, GA3, GA4, GA5, GA7, GA8) LO7 critically apply legal and ethical principles related to the palliation experience. (GA3)
GA9
• Recognise the importance of mouth care as a component of patient assessment across
the lifespan
• Awareness of the outcomes and complications of poor mouth - care on quality of life for the patient
• Deliver high quality patient assessment across the lifespan of the oral mucosa and teeth
• Uphold Cultural safety when caring for a patient at the end of life
• Educate the patient and their family on the importance of mouth-care in a culturally safe and respectful manner
• Be aware of best practice standards for mouth care and uphold them in your clinical care
• Able to provide education to ensure high quality standards and best practice for mouth care are upheld
• Application of mouth care theory to practice in upholding National Palliative Care
Standards within care planning and delivery of care
The above could be some of the objectives that you write in your booklet.
As you are preparing for this assessment, consider the research that you are finding.
1. Are there any common points that keep coming up in the literature?
2. Are certain areas of education or knowledge lacking in the literature?
3. Have you seen things on clinical placement that you know could be improved? If so ,how?
Asking yourself these types of questions when you research your topic will assist you to realise what it is that you actually want to teach individuals that read your booklet and fundamentally these will develop into your learning outcomes.
I hope this is of assistance to you

I am wishing to do my issue on .
Am I on the right track ?
Re: Assessment topic
by xxxxx2 -
me to was looking at doing a very similar topic respecting a persons final wishes without passing
judgement thus leaving there dignity and autonomy intact would love to know if this is on the right
track

Re: Assessment topic
byyyyyyyy -
Hello xxxxxxx
This is a wonderful issue and one that upholds the palliative care standards, define what it is that -dignity- means for your assessment supported with evidence based practice.
It is important to realise that even though you are interested in doing this topic they will all differ as your focus on dignity will be different which is wonderful !
Aspects of dignity are included in all areas of Total Care as highlighted in modules 1 and 2 at the links below
Module 1 - Dame Cicley saunders Total Pain
- https://leo.acu.edu.au/mod/book/view.php?id=3196758&chapterid=292608

Looking forward to seeing your assignments
I hope this has assisted you all
4. Critically apply nursing ethical and legal requirements when providing EOLC
5. Establish the link between intellectual disabilities and the National Palliative Care Standards
.
Is this correct?
Thank-you in advance for your help!

Assessment task 1 by xxxxx-
Goodevening,
I was just wandering if my topic i.e. Pain management in palative care or prevention of bed sore in palative care is a relevant topic for the task one or i need to change the topic? thank you
Re: Assessment task 1
byyyyyyyy -
Hello xxxx
Your topic is a good idea, I would develop the wording a little more and research -Maintaining
Skin Integrity and Comfort in Palliative Care-
this will provide you with the ability to research
more literature and also to include not only bed sores however breakdown of skin, implements
and interventions such as pressure mattresses, Pressure Area Care
etc and how t hese relate to
the National Palliative Care standards
PCC4U
by xxxxx - Friday, 21 August 2020, 3:47 PM
Can we reference information from the PCC4U website?
If so, would the intext citation and reference list be -PCC4U- or must we right it in full as Palliative Care Curriculum for Undergraduates.
Thanks
Re: PCC4U
by yyyyyy -
Hello,
Yes you can use information from PCC4U, follow APA guidelines on how to use an acronym within your referencing, all details are explained on this process.
In your Reference list you would present it as
Palliative Care Curriculum For Undergraduates [PCC4U], (2020). Title of the page. Retrieved

from link

If you do this then within the document you can use PCC4U after you have used the full wording
Please utilise the information that has been provided for you on referencing on our LEO page at
