Recent Question/Assignment

Scenario: You are a graduate engineer of a civil construction company based in Melbourne. Your company was approached by a multi-national organisation that specializes in campus living accommodation to conduct Infrastructure Needs Assessment for a proposed new campus village for international students. The scope will be the infrastructure needs of both the transport and water networks with focus on the whole life cycle stages from planning, construction to operations and maintenance. As it is envisioned to be a modern place they lean towards smart and sustainable facilities. You are required to prepare an Infrastructure Needs Assessment Report (minimum 1000 words) and submit it on 3rd September 2020 (i.e. within six weeks/Week 6). Use Section 2 IIMM – Understanding requirements as reference .
Background: Your manager wants you to do this project and suggested you use Section 2 IIMM – Understanding requirements as your reference in preparing the report. However, you may research and find a guide that suits your purpose. It is expected that you will be covering key points of both transport and water areas. As a guide the transport infrastructure needs will cover local roads inside the international student village within the campus and connectivity to arterial road ( i.e. Plenty Road), access to public transport like buses ( if available in the near future or your Campus Village own fleet of buses) that will bring students/passengers to nearest train station, on street parking ( for students with cars), etc. They expect that the active and sustainable transport are to be included in your assessment and report so it will help to include bicycle lanes and walk ways or pedestrian footpaths to access the parks or other areas of the 630 hectare campus site. The water infrastructure needs will cover the provision of safe, potable drinking water 24 hours 7 days a week. This will include drainage and sewer infrastructure. It is expected you will be adhering to water sensitive urban design guidelines (Melbourne). Note: Another company will look after the infrastructure needs for Information Technology and other services. (Follow lectures given in weeks 1 – 5). Be S.M.A.R.T in any assumptions you make (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time bounded).
Project brief: The project will be highly similar to the “Yarra House”, which is Melbourne Polytechnic’s first on-campus student accommodation. Yarra House is situated inside Melbourne Polytechnic Fairfield Campus. Check online both Yarra House and the Fairfield Campus for further information to help you in this task. The location of this new international student village will be inside Melbourne Polytechnic’s Yan Yean at Northern Lodge site. This is at 2005 Plenty Road, Yan Yean, Victoria 3055. Yan Yean farm is 630 hectares training site which is just four kilometres south of Whittlesea on Plenty Road. Check online the campus for further information. It is envisioned to operate this new international student village similar to the Yarra House inside the Fairfield Campus. The clients have international experience in managing these facilities. For this project, the clients are expecting: One unit/building ( i.e. similar to Yarra House) exclusively for 100 women international students Three units/buildings (i.e. similar to Yarra House) for 300 men international students Be S.M.A.R.T in any assumptions you make.
