Assessment task 3: Communication portfolio & reflection
Weight: 40%
Task: Building on A2, students will work in teams to research, design and develop a coherent body of individual health or science communication elements contributing to the team's communication portfolio.
Each student will submit a 1,000-word communication element AND a 500-word reflection.

Further information: Students will be assessed individually on their original contribution to their team's portfolio of audio/visual/web/text/etc. responses to the communication challenge. Communication element - Students elect to research and produce one communication element from a variety of eligible types including, but not limited to, the following: news stories, press releases, advertisements, videos, podcasts, patient information leaflet, community poster, cartoon story, sketch or skit, etc.. Individual contributions to the portfolio will be 1000 words or the audio & / or visual equivalent (maximum five minutes for audio visual or audio). Individual reflection - 500 words discussing individual role, community consultation, evidence, narrative strategy, use of emotion, ethics, culture and professionalism.
Group presentations of team strategies and progress will take place in Week 12.

How do I use assignment criteria /marking rubric? (See below for rubric)
1/ Make sure you read the criteria before you start your assignment and definitely before you finalise and submit it.
2/ If you don't understand one of the criteria read the rubric, ask a friend or ask your tutor
3/ Think about how your communication element and reflection are meeting the requirements - for example sometimes people forget to include an ethical statement or don't refer to the ethics resources. It's better to check you have all the elements. If you are aiming for a strong grade please make sure that you make use of some of the required readings in your reflective statement, for example, you might talk about how you use character, emotion and story telling by referring to Olson and/or Wahl-Jorgensen.
4/ Start soon so you have time to get a first draft finished well before the due date. Then re-read the criteria and ask yourself can I lift one more elements up to a higher grade by re-writing or improving the text, argument, referencing, etc..
So what exactly are we doing?
A3 has two parts: a 1000 word communication of health or science and a reflection on your professional practice
A3 is designed to allow you to use your communication skills, originality and creativity to research and produce a communication which conveys a key piece of evidence found in one or more recent and relevant scholarly sources to the target audience. So, for example, you might find the latest evidence of effective treatment for anxiety and report this in ways that will engage and inform your target audience. Your communication element can take one of following forms: news stories, press releases, advertisements, videos, podcasts, patient information leaflet, community poster, cartoon story, sketch or skit. If the medium or genre you wish to use is not here in this list please email Catriona Bonfiglioli on catriona.bonfiglioli@uts.edu.au describing your planned A3 for approval. The goal is to find and evaluate credible sources of health or science information, learn about how your chosen issue or condition is viewed by a specific community, and use your communication and narrative skills to research and produce a communication element to get the message about your selected piece of evidence across to your chosen audience.
In this assignment you are expected to
Research and produce a 1,000-word communication element
Reflect in 500 words about ethics and professionalism used in your practice and demonstrate your understanding of social, ethical and political significance of health and science communication
This is the checklist for things you should write about in the reflective statement:
- Individual role - How did you contribute to A2? and, What let you to make the communication choices for A3?
- Community consultation - How did you discover community views in A2? and, How has your knowledge of community views informed your A3?
- Evidence - name a key piece of health or science evidence discovered in A2 and explain why you chose to use this in your A3 and how.
- Narrative strategy - How did you make use of character (sources, interviews, case studies, personal stories, etc.), emotion, drama, and other story telling techniques. Try to discuss this using quotes or concepts from Olson (see Week Four required reading list in the subject outline)
- Use of emotion - How did you make use of emotion to make your communication more powerful or more engaging (Plutchik's wheel of emotion up at UTS

- Ethics - How did you make sure your practice is ethical (refer to relevant codes of ethics/practice and the UTS FASS UG research guide ethics rules)? - Culture - When thinking about target audiences for your communication did you think about diversity, multiculturalism, Indigenous peoples, differences in professional cultures between science and communication or medicine and communication?
- Professionalism - What profession are you aspiring to join? How did you use a relevant code of ethics/practice to try to make your work as professional as you can?
Please remember to make use of relevant readings from the subject outline's list of required readings in your reflection statement and provide a list of references at the end.

What are we expected to submit to Turnitin?
You need to submit:
- An assignment cover sheet
- Your communication element (or a link to its online location)
- Your reflection statement
You can only submit one item to Turnitin - this means you need to put all elements into one word file or PDF or Powerpoint. If your A3 communication element is online (webpage, YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, etc.) please make sure that you CLEARLY state that you have created an online element and provide links in a prominent place at the TOP of your assignment (after the coversheet). Please use the A3 assignment coversheet.
If you submit the wrong version to Turnitin and need to replace it, please email catriona.bonfiglioli@uts.edu.au stating clearly what needs to be removed so you can upload the new version.
