• The unfolding case study has been provided to establish context when answering the questions.
• Each question (i.e. your response/discussion) must be supported with evidence (academic references).
Unfolding Case Study
Tim is a registered nurse working in a busy tertiary general hospital in Western Australia. As part of Tim’s patient load, he will often care for consumers diagnosed with mental illness or admitted with both physical and mental health issues. Tim knows that physical illness and mental illness can be linked and will always ensure he provides holistic nursing care to all his patients.
Question 1: Mental health promotion is a broad domain that includes the biopsychosocial and spiritual dimensions of the lifespan. Mental health and well-being are encompassed in all aspects of an individual’s life and must be addressed at many levels to ensure quality of life (physical and mental health) and social wellbeing. Discuss this statement and provide rationale for your answer.
(400 words approximately)
General hospitals and the health care system is increasingly faced with the need to address the management and care of individuals with multiple co-existing diseases. As an R.N Tim knows that many consumers diagnosed with mental illness also have physical complications and vice versa.
Question 2: Discuss this statement and outline why a comprehensive mental health assessment is essential for the nurse to undertake when admitting patients in a general hospital ward. Provide
rationale to support your answer. (350 words approximately)
Question 3: Provide two (2) possible occasions when a consumer would present with psychiatric symptoms, but may actually have an underlying physical illness that requires treatment. Provide
rationale for your answer. (150 words approximately)
Tim has received handover on patient Nicole, a 32-year-old woman admitted to Tim’s medical ward following an overdose of psychotropic medications. Nicole is emotionally labile, has had trouble following her treatment schedule, is frustrated with the limits and compromises of being in hospital, is demanding medications, and has threatened suicide. Tim has also noted old scars on Nicole’s forearms. The clinical nurse specialist has proposed that Tim work together with Nicole to identify treatment options and goals for her health, wellbeing and overall functioning.
Question 4: Given Nicole’s current presentation, outline the priority assessments that Tim would undertake, and discuss how Tim might identify issues affecting Nicole. Provide rationale for your
answer. (450 words approximately)
Tim knows that anxiety disorders and depression are highly prevalent mental health problems in the Australian community. Tim is looking after Jane a 27-year-old mother who has lived with symptoms of anxiety since she was in high school. Jane tells Tim she has recently started worrying more about little things and is now scared to leave her home for fear of what might happen. She says she is also not sleeping, not eating as much as usual and is lacking motivation to go out as she used to. She states she thought this was just due to her anxiety, but is now worried it might be something else.
Question 5: The early detection and treatment of anxiety and depression is important to promote a person’s wellbeing. Often anxiety and depression will go ‘hand-in- hand’ or one precedes or can mask the other. Discuss this statement and identify how health professionals can assist in the early detection of these diagnoses. Provide your rationale and reasoning to support your answer.

Important details about your assessment
General
The case study word limit is 2000 words (plus or minus (+/-) 10%. All words are calculated towards the word limit except for the title page, direct quotes and end text references. If you choose to ‘cut and paste’ the question or use headings – these are not included in your word count. If you write less, it is unlikely you will have covered all aspects of the assignment, and marks may not be awarded in the content and critical thinking section of the marking rubric.
1. Word approximates are a guide only. Please use your judgement – this is not a prescriptive number, merely a guide to assist with your writing.
2. Marks will be allocated as per the SNM Assessment Rubric as outlined within the assignment brief. This assessment is marked out of 100 (as per SNM marking rubric) and converted to 40% (a mark out of 40).

__________________________________________________________________________________
Here you will be assessed on your ability to form a logical piece of work that contains an introduction, the main body of work (addressing the questions) and a conclusion.
Introduction: The introductory paragraph should introduce the purpose of the paper and provide an overview of the key aspects to be explored within the paper. The introduction should be clear, specific and direct the reader to what you will be addressing, answering or discussing within the assignment. For this assignment only include one (1) reference in the opening sentence that is related to the topic to set up the paper, to provide context, or to make a strong opening statement. No further references should be included within the introduction. (Approximately 100 words)
Main body: The body of the paper (discussion on the five (5) questions) should contain a logical and cohesive development of ideas and your ability to sustain logical discussion will be assessed. The main part (body) of your essay is your discussion on each question. Your discussion (not description) should contain appropriate material (unit content and research) to comprehensively answer each question with regards to the case study.
Conclusion: The concluding paragraph should provide a comprehensive and strong summation of the key points discussed from each of the questions. The conclusion should also reflect the student’s position and provide clear insights into the issue (as identified within the questions).

40. Please make note of the assessment due date.

42. You are strongly advised not to leave your submission until the last day; rather you work on your assessment starting early and writing/researching as the semester progresses.
43. Submission is through the Turnitin link on Blackboard; instructions and link is accessible under the Assignments tab- assessments- tab.

Please do not just look at the %; download and review your ‘coloured’ sections highlighted throughout your paper. A general tip – the more colour, the more you need to change/paraphrase! Changing and paraphrasing these sections will minimise any potential academic misconduct/plagiarism issues being brought to my attention.
