Assessment Item 2: Written Assessment
Part 1: Essay Plan: Complete a comprehensive essay plan (500 words)
Using the essay template, ensure all sections are completed. This task counts to 10% of this assessment. This is a plan for the essay and is due in week four. The academic learning hub (located at St Albans library) is a useful service that can assist in the essay planning process.
Part 2: Essay: Write a structured essay (1500 words)
This counts towards 50% of this assessment. The essay is due in week eight.
You are to choose one of the topics covered in either Module 3 (Managing Challenging Behaviours) or Module 4 (Physical Illness and Comorbidity).
Choose from one of two available essay topics:
1. Discuss the assessment, prevention and management of (aggression/behaviours of concern), for persons living with a mental illness
Include the following in your discussion:
o The prevalence of (aggression/behaviours of concern) in consumers with mental illness o The risk factors for (aggression/behaviours of concern)
o Identify from the literature the consumers’ perspectives and lived experience relating to the topic o Describe best practice approaches/models/standards/guidelines
o Discuss the mental health nurse’s role and nursing interventions to minimise (aggression/behaviours of concern) o Highlight any barriers to those interventions
Include the following in your discussion:
o The prevalence of different physical illnesses that tend to occur comorbidly with severe mental illnesses o The risk factors for those physical illnesses
o Identify from the literature the consumers’ perspectives and lived experience relating to the topic o Describe best practice approaches/models/standards/guidelines
o Discuss the treatment options and the mental health nurse’s role and nursing interventions o Highlight any barriers to those interventions
Then, develop an essay that enables you to explore and investigate aspects of that topic in greater detail:
Your essay should include the following:
• Review and critically analyse the literature
• Use high-level quality contemporary evidence-based literature (i.e. peer reviewed journals) to inform the discussion and critical analysis
• Word limit for the essay: 1500 words, including in-text citations (but excluding words contained in the reference section)

Assessment Criteria
Your essay should be structured as follows:
Introduction
• Start by setting the context and providing relevant background information.
• Include a thesis statement that is a response to the essay question, and that summarises the main aim or argument of the essay. • Outline the main ideas to be discussed in the essay, in the order they appear in the body of the essay.
Body
• Each paragraph should cover a single idea expressed in a topic sentence, followed by supporting evidence and examples from contemporary academic literature, including peer-reviewed journal articles.
Conclusion: A summary of your appraisal.
• Restate your thesis and sum up your arguments
• Make recommendations for future directions
All written assessments must align to the following academic standards:
• use high-level quality contemporary evidence-based literature to inform the discussion and critical analysis
• use of the third person, unless specifically indicated otherwise;
• APA 6th edition for in-text citations and reference list;
• the following structure: an introduction, body and conclusion or as per directions in the assessment instructions; • adherence to the word count;
• a 12 size font in either Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri;
• 1.5 line spacing; and
• submitted using an MS word document only.
All assessments should have a title page that specifies:
• Unit Code & Unit Name
• Student Name
• Student Identification number
• Title of assignment
• An accurate word count that includes in-text citations, but excludes the reference section at the end of the essay
