1. Setup or adjust your workstation, desk or work area in accordance with ergonomic considerations, the practical layout of necessary documents and occupational health and safety requirements.
a. Use the checklist in Appendix 1 to setup or adjust your work area. Additional information on the correct set up of your workstation can be found on the Ergonomics in Australia website at http://www.ergonomics.com.au/pages/400_useful_info/420_how_to_sit.htm .
Appendix 1 – Ergonomic and environmental checklist
Yes No
Are you placed under pressure to meet demanding work targets or deadlines?
If yes, is the pressure a result of external sources or your own disorganisation?
Has there been consistency in workload recently? (this is preferable to sudden increases in workload or working overtime)
Have work pauses been taken as appropriate?
Is the chair easily adjusted from a seated position?
Can you get close to the workstation without impediment?
Is the seat height adjustable so that your thighs are parallel to the floor, with feet resting on the floor or a footrest?
Is the backrest height-adjusted to fit into the small of your back and adequately support your spine?
Is the backrest angle-adjusted so that you are sitting upright while typing?
Are your forearms parallel with the floor or slightly angled downward?
Is the desk height adjustable?
If yes, is the adjustment easily operated?
If no, do you have a footrest?
If there is a footrest, is it large enough to support both feet and allow a change of position?
When sitting tall and looking straight ahead, are you looking at the top edge of the screen?
Is the screen at a comfortable reading distance?
Are all characters in the display easily legible and the image stable?
Can the position and contrast of the screen be adjusted by the user?
Is the keyboard detached from the screen to ensure a comfortable working position?
Is the keyboard thin enough for comfortable positioning of the arms (it should be less than 30mm thick at the home row of keys)?
Is the keyboard matte finished to prevent irritation from glare and reflection?

ANSWER=

ANSWER=

d. Demonstrate five benefits of ergonomic procedure in front of the audience and describe these in your answer along with brief explanation.
ANSWER=
The following exercises are designed to stretch the joints and muscles that are shortened while you work at a computer.
• Hold each stretch for 10 to 15 seconds.
• Be sure to keep breathing while stretching.
• Repeat each stretch two to three times.
• Repeat these stretches every one to two hours while working on the computer.
• Get up from your computer and walk around every two to three hours.
• Each stretch should be done slowly and carefully. They should not hurt.
Office safety strategy
Task variety: This is best done by mixing intensive keyboard use and other computer use with a variety of other work. It is important that the different tasks involve a change in posture and muscles used to perform the work.
Keyboard skills: When beginning to use computers, it is important to learn basic typing skills. This can be achieved through short but frequent training with the use of tutorial software programs. This approach can equally apply to two finger typists who may have developed a reasonable knowledge of the keyboard but cannot operate it without looking at the keys.
Computer settings: setting up favorites and using short cuts.
Breaks: Rest or work breaks can range from short pauses to defined breaks such as lunch
2. Describe two exercises and one other strategy (not exercise) that you can undertake to reduce the risk of injury when using a computer. Explain how often you would recommend the exercises are done
Answer= Exercise 1
STRETCHING - The main type of exercise to prevent injury from continued computer use is stretching. It allows the muscles and tendons to relax and exit the state of tension to which they are subjected during typing or while sitting in the wrong position. Stretching is recommended every day because you need to relax your muscles daily.
Exercise 2
WALKING - Walk further from the shops and public transportation, or take a walk at lunchtime, are quick and easy ways to increase activity in your day. Walking can help prevent back and neck pain.
This is recommended at least three times a week.
Other strategy
ASSESSING RISK IN THE WORKPLACE - We all know we need to be assessing and managing risk in the workplace. The law is extremely clear that risk assessment is one of the key responsibilities of business owners and managers. Using the guidance provided by the Code of Practice for manual handling/manual tasks relevant to your state/territory is one of the most effective methods of assessing and analysis of risks.
3. Setup or adjust the energy conservation settings on your computer to perform the following settings. Take a screen shot of the settings screen showing that you have made the requested adjustments.
a. Set the monitor to turn off after 15 minutes of inactivity.
b. Identify the how to access the online help (manual) function
c. Use the online function to identify how to set the computer to go into standby mode after 1 hour of inactivity. Write the steps below.
ANSWER=
4. Evaluate the energy conservation settings on your computer that you suggested in task 3 and how it would improve workplace practices.
ANSWER=

ANSWER=

• Use spreadsheet instead of paper: the spreadsheet will provide correct number and also organized, save cost and material efficiency
• Use the material such as paper again for reuse
• Limit time of air condition such as turn off the air con when it is 6.30 pm every day to save energy
6. Suggest where and how a business operation in Australia can store its business records. Ensure that you include references to both hard (paper) and soft (electronic) storage suggestions and data back-up options in your answer.
