Length – 1600 words
Students will engage in a critical review of literature in relation to the development of early childhood education in the Australian context and use this understanding to create their own educational philosophy.
The assessment task provides 6 key readings that are the focus for the assignment. You will find them listed on page 2.
As you start this assessment task don’t forget to introduce your assignment, the reader/marker needs to know that you know what your assignment is about. It is a contextual review that is comprised of three key parts, a literature review, educational philosophy and annotated bibliography.
This reading assessment is developed in three parts –
Part 1 - Literature critique
The literature critique asks you to draw from the provided readings in order to describe the Australian early childhood education context over time. This overview must focus on early childhood in terms of the changes that have taken place. Consider how things have evolved and argue why these changes are significant (600 words). This is developed further in page 3
Part 2 – Developing an educational philosophy in the current Australian context that is informed by the provided readings and focuses on these questions ‘what is the purpose of an early childhood setting’ and ‘who is an early childhood teacher?’ (500 words) This is developed further in page 4
Part 3 – Annotated bibliography for 3 of the readings (500 words).This is developed further in page 4

Part 1 - Literature critique
The literature critique asks you to draw from the provided readings in order to describe the Australian early childhood education context over time. This overview must focus on early childhood in terms of the changes that have taken place. Consider how things have evolved and argue why these changes are significant (600 words).

Study the readings that are provided what are the key changes that have taken place over time.
Map the events out
Step 2 -
How have they influenced how children in their early years are viewed?
How have the changes influenced the role of early childhood settings in the Australian context?
How have they influenced ideas around ‘quality’ in the early years and standards in the early years?
Step 3 –
Outline why these changes are significant?
Why do these changes influence childhood identity?
Part 2 - Developing an educational philosophy in the current Australian context that is informed by the provided readings and focuses on these questions ‘what is the purpose of an early childhood setting’ and ‘who is an early childhood teacher?’ (500 words)
‘What is the purpose of an early childhood setting?’
Step 1 – Describe what the purpose of the early childhood setting is in the Australian context. Demonstrate your knowledge by explaining what the different types of early childhood settings could be, and there key characteristics. (150 words)
Step 2 – Move from the general to the specific. Argue that one of the key characteristics that defines a centre is its educational philosophy.
In (200 words) develop an educational philosophy for a centre that you would one day like to teach in, direct or manage.
‘Who is an early childhood teacher?’
Step 3 – With support from your readings explain what role the early childhood teacher plays in an EC setting in the Australian context. It is important for you to be able to develop a key list of responsibilities but also explain why these responsibilities are significant. (100 words)
Step 4 – Conclude your contextual review in 50 words
Remember a conclusion is an opportunity to summarise what you have considered in the assignment and how important the topic is.
Part 3 – Annotated bibliography for 3 readings (500 words). This is developed further in page 5
Your annotated bibliography for this purpose must include the following –
a. Reference details , please refer to the Deakin Harvard referencing guide http://www.deakin.edu.au/students/studying/study-support/referencing/harvard and provide a full reference for the scholarly material as you would write it in a reference list.
b. A short statement that explains the main focus or purpose of the reading. In your statement about the focus of the reading, ensure you state the main objective of the reading. Who is the intended audience for the literature and what is it trying to convey to the reader?
For example, does it provide findings on key research, is it a chapter of a book that seeks to outline an issue for instance, what is the author’s point of view?
c. A description of some of the key areas in the reading and how they assisted you in your understanding. How was the text useful to you?
Each reading must be handled separately in the annotate bibliography.
Please include an additional reference list for other readings that you draw from in the assessment.
The title of the reference list is simply ‘reference list’
