You are to write a news article for your chosen media outlet. For example, this could be an online travel blog, a major metropolitan daily such as the Courier Mail, the Sydney Morning Herald or The Age, a travel magazine or a lifestyle magazine. The article topic is “Operating in the Great Barrier Reef”. Your article should include the following topic areas outlined in the assessment details. The assessment addresses LO’s 1, 3 and 4 and aims to assist you in understanding the factors that influence business and customers in hospitality and tourism markets.
In preparing your newspaper article, you must answer the following points:
• Include an introductory summary of the overview of the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef, the chosen business segment your article will focus, and the media choice.
• Choose either a business segment from the hospitality sector or the tourism sector and focus your article on that sector only.
• Discuss the importance of the chosen business segment to the local community through jobs, economic development and tourism and the customer segments the business segment services. You need to stay focussed throughout the article on your location, business and the customer segments.
• Include discussion in your article on the environmental factors including social, political, ecological, international, legal and technological impacting the segment locally and discuss the factors currently influencing the success of business and the ability to meet the needs of your customers.
• Discuss how business is reacting to these factors and meeting the needs of the changing landscape and consumers through innovation and adaptation.
• Conclude the article with considerations needed for the future sustainability of business and any changes required to ensure operation in the future.
You are required to reference at least 8 sources of information. These may include corporate websites, government publications, industry reports, census data, and journal articles. In referencing sources, you must apply Harvard Referencing Style to your in-text citations and consequently to the reference list.

Assignment Submission
This file must be submitted as a ‘PDF’ document to avoid any technical issues that may occur from incorrect file format upload. Late assignment submission penalties
Penalties will be imposed on late assignment submissions in accordance with Kaplan Business School’s “late assignment submission penalties” policy.
Number of days Penalty
1* - 9 days 5% per day for each calendar day late deducted from the total marks available
10 - 14 days 50% deducted from the total marks available.
After 14 days Assignments that are submitted more than 14 calendar days after the due date will not be accepted and the student will receive a mark of zero for the assignment(s).
Note Notwithstanding the above penalty rules, assignments will also be given a mark of zero if they are submitted after assignments have been returned to students
*Assignments submitted at any stage within the first 24 hours after deadline will be considered to be one day late and therefore subject to the associated penalty
