TEACHING & LEARNING STRATEGIES
This is a unit of study where learners are responsible for managing their own time in completing prescribed reading, undertaking
further research and completing assessment tasks. Students are expected to participate in practical prob lem solving sessions, usually
through team work, in class, and through case study analysis. Students are supported through regular in -class contact, such as
lectures, tutorials and workshops and are expected to participate in online learning activities, pe er discussion and review, and selfreflection. For every classroom-based contact hour it is expected that students will undertake another two hours of self-directed work.
GRADUATE CAPABILITIES
Victoria University’s Graduate Capabilities are generic skills that all students should possess at graduation. These skills are in addition
to the specific knowledge and skills associated with the discipline area of students’ degrees. Graduate Capabilities are divi ded into five
levels (for undergraduates) and will be achieved progressively with increasing levels of sophistication. A full description of the
Graduate Capabilities can be found in the VU Graduate Capabilities policy
This unit of study contributes to development of these Graduate Capabilities in a number of ways.

Assessment Type: 2A: Team – 2B: Team
Aim:
In this assignment teams will complete one (1) of three (3) possible project options: Your local facilitator will advise you on the
options available to you at your campus.
A business start up project,
A self-selected business challenge
An Industry Project (including the Bendigo Bank Challenge) (Melbourne Only)
In each case you will be required to undertake substantial background research, devise a recommendation/solution from a range of
options, identify impacting issues and prepare project documentation. Your project will form the basis of your industry presentation.
2a. Project Outline
The Project Outline describes in broad terms the purpose of the project, the background (ie why did you choose this particular
project), the scope and the project objectives. Teams should complete the Project Outline and ensure that it is limited to one
page. In producing this document you must use size 12 font and a minimum margin of 2cms. A minimum of 2 references must be
utilized. Please refer to the template on WebCT.
2b. Project Initiation Document (PID)
The purpose of a PID is to define elements of the project. It includes both a Business Case (which you did in Professional
Development 2) and how you are going to implement the project. A PID is used by management (or investors) to assess your
concept and to judge its potential to succeed. Information included in the PID will answer the following questions for management
or investors:
? What is the project aiming to achieve?
? Why it is important to achieve it or is there a market for the product?
? Who will be involved and what are their responsibilities?
? How will it be undertaken and organised?
? How much will it cost?
A PID outlines all of the essentials to form a firm foundation for the project, including project objectives, project scope, business
benefits and risks, stakeholder analysis and project timeframes. Note: This is the final document and forms the basis upon which
your final industry panel presentation is made. There should be no ambiguity. The PID should clearly outline why, what, when and
how the project is going to be done.
10
Project Types
As a PD3 student you will be working in a team on one specific project. Your project may be from the following categories. Please
refer to your local facilitator for further details.
Business Start Up
Business Challenge
Industry Project (Details to be confirmed)
All of the project options will ensure you maximise your learning whilst you work on a real life business challenge!
Please refer to WebCT for a detailed description of each of the project options.
Project Initiation Document (PID) Template
Templates for the PID documents have been provided on WebCT. It is compulsory to use the template provided. Should you
believe it necessary to make changes to the template based on your unique project, these changes must be negotiated with your
facilitator and stream leader. It is essential to give particular attention to how you format and present the document. The following
guidelines apply:
1. Charts, tables and graphs are essential components
2. Supporting materials, such as survey results, financial analysis computations, economic and resource calculations, and
detailed explanations can be included in an appendix. Please Note: The PID Appendices must be limited to 8 pages.
3. All financial/budgetary computations must be accompanied by appropriate descriptions and rationale. If your facilitator
cannot understand the assumptions that your financials are based on this will affect your overall PID mark.
4. Professional quality layout and graphics, including use of colour printing, is required.
5. Spelling, punctuation and grammar must be of the appropriate standard
6. Copyright of any photographs or other images (including logos) used must be attributed and where necessary permission
for use obtained.
Please note – Each project type uses its own PID template. Please ensure that you download the correct document from WebCT.

presentation. This presentation provides you with an excellent opportunity to practice for your final presentation which takes place at
the end of semester.
Your final presentation may be to an Industry Panel and is worth 25%.
Please Note: The Project Outline Presentation is a ‘hurdle task’ which means that even though your team does not receive a mark your team
must satisfactorily complete the presentation.
Details of Final Industry Panel Presentation:
Having completed, and submitted, the Project Initiation Document your team will be required to:
1. Present your project to a panel comprising representatives drawn from Industry and the College of Business Academic Staff. Your
seminar facilitator may be present.
2. Participate in a question and answer session with your panel.
3. Provide a copy of your PID Executive Summary which will be distributed to your panel prior to your presentation. This is to be
provided to your facilitator during your Week 11 class.
Your team's presentation will be a maximum of 10 minutes. The Question and Answer discussion will be a minimum of 10 minutes.
The Panel presentation begins with a summary presentation of your project to the industry panel. This presentation runs for 10 minutes. You
may use your 10 minutes to present your project in the manner you believe best serves both the project and your overall objective of convincing
the panel that your proposal is serious, considered, and worth supporting. You can use PowerPoint, film, and/or handouts or simply reply on
your presence and the spoken word. Whatever you choose to use, and however you choose to get the message across in this presentation it is
essential to consider the following points:
1. Determine who your audience is
2. What are you trying to achieve in the presentation?
3. What role each team member take in the presentation?
4. Plan what you need to do to achieve a convincing, inspiring, and excellent professional presentation
5. If you use slides design them carefully. Make sure they are not too ‘busy’ and don’t contain too much text.
6. Be conscious of the quality of any printed documents you give the panel.
7. Dress appropriately for a professional presentation.
The second part of the Industry Panel Presentation is a question and answer session with the industry panel where you will have the opportunity
to discuss your project IN DETAIL. In preparing for this session you need to be aware that:
1. All team members will be required to understand all aspects of the project.
2. You will be able to provide additional supporting materials to the Panel to support both your presentation and your team responses to
questions
3. The Panel will have been provided with your executive summary as a briefing paper prior to the discussion, and will therefore have
had time to consider questions they may wish to direct to you;
4. Your capacity to respond to questions, to respond to criticism, and to substantiate your claims with evidence will be evaluated and
forms an integral part of the assessment.
Please Note: All team members must participate in the Panel Presentation in some capacity. For example, if a team member has not
participated in the presentation they must take on a major role in the question and answer session.

Overview
The Peer Review Assignment involves two key tasks in weeks 4 and 12.
In Week 4 your team is required to complete a Team-on-Team review using the template provided on following pages of your unit guide. You
will be asked to critique another team’s presentation and provide constructive feedback to them which they then utilise in their individual
reflection piece 4B and to refine their future presentations.
Assessment 4A requires you to complete an individual reflection based on the Team-on-Team review given to your team. The word limit for the
reflection is 500 words. Your reflection should demonstrate a mature and thoughtful response to any constructive criticism received. You may
utilise the DIEP format that you used in PD1.You must submit your Reflection to Turnitin in WebCT in Week 5. Please refer to WebCT for more
detail on the DIEP method.
Assessment 4B requires you to track your progress over the course of the semester. At various project milestones, you will be expec ted to
demonstrate completion and obtain a signature from your facilitator. This document also acts as a contract between you and your team
members. The Project Status Report template is included in your unit guide. Completion of the template is ongoing, and the document
must be submitted in week 12 as an attachment to your PID.
ASSESSMENT 4a: Individual Reflection-Team on Team Review –15%-Learning Outcome 5
Instructions
1. As a reviewer you will individually review ANOTHER group’s presentation of their project. Fill out
this hardcopy template during their presentation and Q&A session. The Review team will be
expected to lead the Question and Answer.
2. This individual review will be COLLATED into a team review. All individuals will discuss, review
and synthesise their individual reviews and as a team you will then combine these to complete
one team review document.
3. You will EMAIL your collated team review to both the team you reviewed and to your facilitator
prior to the end of your Week 4 seminar.
4. You will REFLECT on your teams’s feedback provided by the Team on Team Review. Use the
marking matrix to guide what you need to address in your reflection. This is an individual piece
of assessment.

Important Information for PD3 students
Plagiarism
Victoria University takes plagiarism very seriously. It is expected that all students are aware of the plagiarism guidelines under which the university operates. Simply remember to
acknowledge other peoples’ work through your referencing and all will be well!
Refer to the following website for further information - http://w2.vu.edu.au/library/referencing/
We also recommend that you familiarise yourself with the university’s Academic Honesty and Preventing Plagiarism Policy.
Special Consideration
If you are not able to submit your work by the extended submission date, and there are valid grounds (i.e. medical, personal hardship or other extenuating circumstances) for not
doing so, you can apply for Special Consideration. Contact your Unit of Study co-ordinator
The form for Special Consideration is available under the ‘Exam and Results section’ at:
http://www.vu.edu.au/student-tools/student-form
Work submitted after the due date, without an extension granted or the relevant documentation provided, will be recorded as being submitted but will attract a zero grade.
This procedure applies to both individual and group assignments.
Supplementary Assessment
If your final result for PD3 falls into the 45-49 range you will be eligible to sit a Supplementary Assessment during the Supplementary exam period. Students are not notified by PD3
staff of their eligibility to sit a supplementary assessment. You must therefore check your final result and if you fall into the supplementary assessment result range you need to
confirm the details of your supplementary assessment on MYVU.
Word Counts
Some of the assessments for PD3 require you to complete the assessment with a certain Word Count in mind. For example, the word count for the Project Initiation Document is
3000 words. It is important you understand that you (or your team) can submit an assessment item that is up to 10% under/over any set word limit. Once you exceed this
additional 10% then your facilitators will STOP READING your document. It is therefore very important that you manage your Word Count carefully.
Appendix
Information that is included in the Appendix of your report is not part of the body of your report, but is useful information that the reader may wish to refer to for more detail.
Anything included in your Appendix is not
included in your Word Count (refer above).
Please be aware that there is a limit on the number of Appendices that you can include with any PD3 assessment piece. A maximum number of 8 pages of Appendices are to
be used.
VU Email Address
Your facilitator and the PD3 Co-ordinators will only communicate with you via your VU email address. Please ensure your VU email address is active and remember to check it
regularly.
Team Work
Working in teams is a wonderful learning experience but sometimes there can be challenges. If you require any assistance in relation to your team please chat with your facilitator.
If the challenges continue then your concerns can be escalated by your facilitator to the PD3 Co-ordinators. In this instance all team members will be required to attend a meeting
with one of the PD3 Co-ordinators to talk through the team related issues.
WebCT
WebCT is full of wonderful information and many of your questions can be answered just be reviewing the PD3 information available . For example, if you require more information
about the DIEP method of reflection just jump onto WebCT for some guidelines! You are expected to check WebCt regularly between seminars for announcements and updates.
You are expected to check WebCt regularly between seminars for announcements and updates.
PD3 Results
To successfully pass PD3 you do not need to pass each individual assessment item. We would however encourage you to endeavour to pass each and every assessment item as
this will maximise your learning and your final result!
Student Support Services
If you require any support during the semester you can of course chat your facilitator. If however you feel you would like some additional support and guidance Student Support
Services would love to hear from you. Refer to the following website for more details: http://www.vu.edu.au/current-students/learning-support
