Case Study
Kevin Smith is a 45-year-old butcher who attends the MissionOZ Community Centre and states he needs some help with his boys. Tama and Manu are his 13-year-old (twins) stepsons whom he has sole custody of , since their mother Mere, Kevin’s partner of 10 years, suddenly passed away about two months ago.
Kevin states that since Mere’s death, Tama’s behaviour has deteriorated with increasing aggressive outbursts and threatening those around him for no apparent reason. Tama and Manu both attend the local high school. Manu is a model student and Tama had previously been an average student, but now he lacks concentration and is regularly sent to the office due to his behaviour. As a result, Kevin has had numerous meetings with the school in relation to Tama’s behaviour.
Tama has always had a good relationship with Kevin and Manu, but was particularly close with his mother and has refused to talk about his feelings since Mere’s death. Kevin has no family support and although Mere was very proud of her Maori heritage she distanced herself from her culture as it reminded her of her family whom she had ceased contact with due to their dysfunctional behaviour and dislike of Kevin.
