The due date is 27/04/16.
Point to for marking criteria
1. For the second assignment do not write a general discussion. That is what might be called dinner party conversation. You have the luxury of undertaking formal study at graduate university level. Your task is to share that knowledge in 3 specific areas, narrowly defined, with colleagues. Effectively you are training others by passing on your knowledge to them. You are doing it in a pithy way while at the same time upholding academic standards, ie citing your sources. You are passing on specific knowledge and insights relevant to specific problems people in your organisation might encounter. These are scoped by the question, eg you might expect the engineers to have expert skills and knowledge in the field of engineering, but not OB. Further the question tells you what your managers concerns are so you need to write a piece that addresses these concerns (poor recruitment, perf mgt, leadership in early career managers and resistance to change.
2. Given this scope, you need to draw on core concepts in perception and decision making in recruitment and performance mgt. In class we identified that attribution theory is the key part and within that there are two main errors. After addressing those two you could then select 2 or 3 so called short cuts that can lead to problems in recruitment and perf mgt.
3. Think about who you are addressing, eg staff who might be called on to be part of a selection committee or a supervisor, maybe a new one, someone who has not been trained in supervision, but who finds themselves doing perf mgt of their reportees.
4. You are not ask to write on everything in leadership theory. Again the question scopes it for you and I have directed you to an excellent reading. Now it is your job to identify the core theoretical concepts in leadership theory (eg task, relationship and the situation/contingency) and provide knowledge and insights to new career managers.
5. Read the intro, you need only one intro (same for conclusion). The intro serves to set the scene. While the purpose should be the same for everyone writing the essay, their take on it may be different, but they should take their cue from the way the question is framed, ie you have your newly acquired knowledge from you MBA, your workplace has some specific problems, you are sharing your knowledge of relevant core concepts and addressing them to those problems. It is not general, it is specific, but different from a typical academic essay in that you are writing for a specific audience. The question reminds you to reference your work.
6. You can simple use words as per a ‘normal’ essay or you can be creative and develop a newsletter style, but still uphold academic standards, pass on core concepts and apply them to the organisation’s named problems.
7. For other guidance see the question, including the aim of the assignment and feedback sheet. Note there are 24 marks for theory and practice (12 each) across 3 topics (4+4x3 marks).
8. You still need depth to your knowledge and this is likely to be demonstrated by your ability to focus on the core concepts, explain them in a concise way and to explain them to a specific problem in a meaningful way.
Assignment 2: Workplace Information Briefs (Individual)
Length: 2300 words
The word limit applies to the essay itself and all references cited in the essay. It does not apply to the end reference list, cover page and title page. (An abstract and table of contents are not required.)
Topic: Perceptual errors & decision making, leadership challenges for new
Question: Having recently graduated with a Masters in Business with a managers, surviving/thriving organisational changespecialisation in human resources, you work for a national engineering firm in the HR department. The firm has approximately 200 employees across five different states who, apart from a small administrative team, are professionals trained in engineering and information technology (IT). While highly skilled in their respective professions, they do not have training in management or business.
Your manager has been concerned about a number of people management issues in the different national offices relating to poor recruitment, performance management, leadership behaviours in early career managers, and resistance to ongoing change programs.
Your manager, impressed with your people management skills, has asked you to prepare an informative e-newsletter to be forwarded as a formal company document to all employees. You have been set the following tasks:
1. Write three information briefs on the topics,
a. Perceptual errors and decision making in recruitment and performance management
b. Early career challenges of junior managers/leaders
c. Resistance to organisational change
2. The e-newsletter is aimed at informing staff who have little, if any knowledge of the critical topics in organisational behaviour.
3. You should develop informative briefs of approximately 750 words each. Each written piece should clearly identify and conceptualise the topic, explain its relevance to understanding and managing behaviour in organisations (one’s own and that of others), and provide clear and concise guidelines to address any issues or improve behaviour and workplace performance. While these written pieces should be designed to inform (and also entertain if you would like them to), they should be linked to relevant theory and examples.
4. The news briefs should uphold academic integrity and use the author-date method for referencing so that the readers may follow up on your sources.
How to Present
You may choose to present the information briefs in words only or you may exercise your creativity and present the newsletter with appropriate illustrations, layout and colour. However, please ensure your newsletter is uploaded to Moodle as a word document (any artwork would need to be embedded into a word document).
• Aim of the assignment:
The aim of this assignment is to develop an understanding of current issues in organisational behaviour and to quickly and articulately communicate these in the context of organisational behaviour theory. Additionally, students should be able to illustrate how knowledge of perceptual errors, leadership behaviours and managing resistance to change can be used to manage employee, and one’s own, behaviours more effectively.Students are not required to cover every concept related to perception and attribution or leadership or change management. Instead, focus on the core concepts relevant to the tasks as they have been scoped by the question above.
Notes: Avoid the use of direct quotes as they do not demonstrate to the marker your understanding of the concepts and reading material and consume many words without attracting any marks. You are required to reference using the author / date method. This method is explained in detail in this Companion to the Unit Outline.
