Assignment 1
(10% of the overall Assessment)
Note: Roundup your answers to the first decimal place
You may stop the moment distribution when balancing moments reach around 5% of the original
1. Draw the Bending Moment Diagram (BMD) and Shear Force Diagram (SFD) for the following beam. EI is constant for all the spans.

Hint: To find the fixed-end moments for the span BC, calculate the FEMs for each point load separately and then use the principle of superposition to get the final FEMs..
2. The support B of the beam shown (E=200GPa, I=50×106mm4) settles 10mm. Use the moment distribution method (MDM) to
a) Draw the BMD
b) Determine the support reactions and hence draw the SFD.

3. Analyse the following non-sway using the MDM.

a. Draw the BMD
b. Use your results, to show that MB=120kNm and HC=20.0kN.
c. Determine all the support reactions and draw the SFD.
