NSB018 Introduction to the Profession of Nursing.
TITLE: Understanding social media as a Student of Nursing.
With the actual and potential risk of breeching Australian patient and staff privacy and confidentiality laws in social media communiqués, the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority (AHPRA) released a Social Media Policy (March 2014) (http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/Codes-Guidelines-
Statements/Policies.aspx) with an expectation that all nurses must be guided by this policy in their nursing career.
As a QUT student of nursing, who will be studying and working both oncampus and offcampus, you are expected to not only adhere to the AHPRA Policies and Codes of Conduct,
(http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/Codes-Guidelines-Statements.aspx) but also the QUT Student Code of Conduct (http://www.mopp.qut.edu.au/E/E_02_01.jsp). It is therefore essential that you understand these regulatory codes. The TASK below asks you to consider professional practice when using social media.
Step 1. Introduce and describe the use and value of Social Media in Health Care in Australia and globally. (250 words: minimum of 3 different references)
Step 2. Discuss how nurses can cause harm in a clinical environment for the patient, colleagues and themselves with the misuse of social media. (250 words: minimum of 3 different references)
Step 3. Outline how the AHPRA Social Medial Policy; the NMBA Code of Ethics/Professional Conduct for Nurses in Australia and the QUT Student Code of Conduct will guide you as a student of nursing in your use of social media. (250 words: minimum of 3 different references): You may write this section in 1st or 3rd person.
Step 4. Develop 3 ‘Golden Rules’ of social media use for you as a student and ultimately a registered nurse. Each golden rule needs to be given a brief title, described clearly and given an explanatory rationale. (250 words: minimum of 3 different references): You may write this in 1st or 3rd person.
Step 5. In an appendix, write two annotated bibliographies which you regard to be your best resources that you used when responding to the TASK in this paper.

PLANNING YOUR PAPER
1. Carefully read the TASK and CRA (marking criteria) identifying key words and directive terms.
2. Read the AHPRA social media policy document and the relevant QUT and NAMBA Codes of Conduct and policy documents that relate to social media use.
3. Look for relevant key factors and key words that relate to the task.
4. Search the literature using the key factors and key words as search terms.
5. Select relevant, contemporary literature and highlight points that will address the task.
6. Plan your paper carefully (key aspects to address) before commencing writing.

Writing your paper.
Writing in 3rd Person.
Your paper must be written in an academic style of 3rd person for Steps 1, 2 and 5, where correct grammar, spelling and punctuation is essential. Correct use of medical terminology, with accurate sentence and paragraphing structure enables a logical and well-reasoned paper to be presented. Try writing in 3rd person for Steps 3 & 4 but you will not be penalised if you write in 1st person if you find it easier.
Example of writing in 3rd person:
“The ability to write clearly and accurately is central to the registered nurse role as an expert communicator” (Calleja, 2013). This is a general statement, and is backed from the literature. It therefore, indicates that the writer’s work has authority and accuracy due to an evidence based approach.
Examples of: not writing in the 3rd person and poor use of written language. This following examples of writing shows immaturity of knowledge, thinking and reasoning.
• I always thought that I wanted to be a nurse. (This is an example of writing in 1st person.
It is an ‘I’ approach, where the writer presents their own perspective only).
• You shouldn’t have done that as now you will be in trouble (This is an example of writing in 2nd person. It is a ‘you’ approach and often presents a judgemental attitude).

You must use APA 6 author date referencing style exactly as outlined on the QUT CITE WRITE website.
This style will be introduced to you in your lectures and practiced in your tutorials.

• This is an individual paper and must not be developed or written in direct collaboration with another.
• Your word limit should be no less than 900 words and no more than 1100 words.
• You must write in third person for this paper.
• Extensions for extenuating circumstances should be made via the link on the Blackboard site. • Referencing must use APA 6 QUT style according to CITE WRITE http://www.citewrite.qut.edu.au/ • No direct quotes should be used in this paper.
• Contemporary literature is regarded to be no more than 5 years old, but choice of literature will be dependent upon availability of resources.
• Where possible use a ‘range’ of materials. For this assessment piece, you will use policies and codes of conduct, but you must also use journal articles and you may also use a small number of relevant text books, newspaper articles, videos/televised interviews and thesis documents where necessary and relevant.
• Where possible use Australian material, but where appropriate expand to international as needed. • The number of references used is dependent upon the paper and the quality of your resources. There have been minimum suggestions of numbers of references. Greater use of the literature though, usually leads to a more comprehensive and insightful paper which may achieve higher grades, but of course this is dependent upon how the material is presented and utilised.
• You must use academic /objective language at all times. There should be no use of slang, derogatory, racist language or personal opinion.
• All information must be drawn and cited from the literature and your conclusions must be as a result of your evidence based discussion about the topic area.
• Punctuation, grammatical expression and sentence and paragraph structure should be exemplary.
• In text referencing and the reference list is not counted in the word count.
• Material in the appendix is not counted in the word count.
Submission & formatting.
• Your assignment is to be submitted via Turnitin which is on your Blackboard site under Assessment.
• There is no need for a ‘hard’ copy to be submitted to your tutor.
• You will be notified automatically by email that your paper has been submitted.
• Even though submission of the paper can be as late as 10.59pm, you are advised to submit a number of hours before this as the system can get overloaded, and if your submission is late without extenuating circumstances, you will automatically receive a 1 grade.
• Provide a title page with your name, student number, unit code – NSB018, name of unit, tutor’s name and assessment number on the first page.
• Your paper needs to be submitted, type written on one side of the page only, font size 12.
• Include a ‘footer’ on each page with your name, student number, unit code and page number.
• You do not need to include a copy of the task or the marking guide.
Academic Dishonesty is not tolerated at QUT and if this occurs whether intentionally or unintentionally, you will be asked to explain and to justify your position as a student at QUT.
Turnitin provides an avenue to check your carefulness in relation to academic dishonesty. Here you will be able to check the originality of your paper against 78,000 journals and databases including previous student’s work. You will be able to submit for originality as many times as you choose until the submission date and time. Again if you wait until the last moment, it can take up to 3 days for the originality report to come back due to overloading of the system.
Beware of social media sites that discuss this unit. If you have questions ask your tutor as often the information that you will secure from a social media site may not be accurate.
Also never share any of your materials online, and be careful to not leave your USB unattended in a computer in a general area (even to go to the printer).
