Purpose: This assessment is designed to allow students to develop research and analytical
skills, applied to understanding the role of managers and their impact on
organisations. This assessment relates to Learning Outcomes a, d and e.
Value: 15%
Submission: Upload a soft copy – Word .doc or .docx
Topic: Detailed in the PP slides on Moodle - 1500-2000 words with a minimum of 3 relevant academic articles - topic related to BHP Billiton - a mining company and TELSTRA - a communication company.
Task Details: Compare and contrast the two companies in relation to the following:
1. A vision or mission statement.
2. Values of the organisation –
3. Corporate Social Responsibility/Sustainability
4. Stakeholders mentioned in their corporate statements
• The comparisons must include an analysis of these statements as to whether they meet the SMART
(Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely) test for objectives and goals.
• Are these statements of intention “believable” and do they add value to these companies?
Research requirements: Students are to support their analysis and conclusions with the text and a
minimum of 3 recent and relevant academic journal articles (written since 2007 where possible).
Presentation: Word .doc or .docx – 1500 - 2000 word short report – title page, executive summary, table
of contents, suitable headings and subheadings, conclusions, reference list (Harvard –
Anglia style). Typed using 12 pt Times New Roman or 11 pt Calibri fonts. Single line
